Hi,
I just received an AVI file with AC3 sound. The picture is O.K., but can not hear any sound. Also I would like to extract the sound for decoding as MPEG file for VCD, but none of my dcoders can read the AC3 sound of this AVI. Anyone a suggestion ???

Do you have ac3 playback filters installed?

Yes, now I got them on a French web site and playback works at least with some programs. But still can not extract the sound to a wav file for mpg vcd encoding. I would like to see this movie on my dvd player, so I need to get a mpg, but no encoder can read the sound. I tried TMPGENC all versions, bbmpg and virtualdub, but all say there is no audio or can't support it. How the hell can I separate the sound ??

perhaps nandub?

no, nundub had same problems than virtualdub.

my last suggestion is graphedit, using the file writer filter.

I tried graphedit and it plays the movie correctly with sound, but doesn't accept the filewriter filter to connect. But even though, how do I get an extracted soundfile out of this avi then? ther is no function like save to wav etc.

sorry, i'm not a graphedit guru. someone else has to answer.

I was having the EXACT same errors as yourself... Nothing was working. Not VDub, not NanDub, nothing... however, Syntrillium's Cool Edit Pro 2.0 has an option to EXTRACT SOUND FROM VIDEO... if you select the AVI w/ the AC3, it will extract and load the sound...then, save as WINDOWS PCM WAV (*.WAV) and then you can load the WAV back into VDub and re-encode to MP3, etc... alternatively, you can save as anything OTHER than PCM WAV, and go from there....

this should solve your problem...

If I remeber right the latest beeswet does support avi input and can encode ac3 to other file format.
