@hank315:
have you ever thought about adding ppf encoding to HCEnc? See this thread for more if you haven't already looked into it http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=134049. I'm wondering for years why no other encoder except Procoder has added this method of enconding interlaced material. I theory this should give superior quality. I would love to see it in HCEnc! :)

Greetings,
Malcolm

Yes, in theory... But only if the whole picture is really interlaced, field encoding of progressive material is a bad idea.
Otoh, progressive encoding of interlaced material is even worse.
In most cases when only a part of the picture is interlaced, it's better to do frame based encoding with DCT field luminance encoding on the MacroBlocks which need it, this is the way most encoders handle it.

So IMHO field encoding isn't always the preferred method, but maybe I will implement it, some day... (it's a lot of work also :devil:)

ProCoder can encode in field and frame structure but also in automatic mode which swap between field and frame structure. Also the MainConcept encoder can do Field or Frame structure encoding (in the advanced settings). The Field structure gains quality on complex interlaced scenes but have less quality than Frame Structure on static scenes (or not-so-complex scenes). The true advantage comes with the ProCoder's Automatic mode but this mode is very incompatible with current dvd players (which mainly supports constant Field OR Frame structure). On an incompatible hardware the video will be jerky when changing from field to frame structure (and viceversa).

maybe I will implement it, some day...I'd like to revive this thread since it's now one year old! ;)
