A couple questions:

1. Why does the quality suck so bad on samplerates below 44 KHz? I swear to god, the same bitrate at 32 KHz sounded like it was playing from the bottom of a garbage can. I realize AAC is optimized for 44, so should I upsample to 44 if my sources are below the number?

2. What -q setting would y'all recommend? I noticed (ABXed actually) that 0.25 sometimes produces better quality than 0.30, and switches from 0.24-0.34 contradict each other often. What would be a professional choice -- the sweet spot for AAC?

I'm doing a new release soon (Princess Mononoke) so if any of you fanboys recognize the title, here's your chance to have an effect on the final audio quality.

ATTN mods: If the above paragraph is illegal, feel free to remove.
