I just burned a DVD-Video onto a DVD-R. The sound works on the PC but it doesn't work on the standalone DVD players I have at home. I even tested it side by side with another DVD-R.
I'm stumped.
Any suggestions?
Appreciate your time and help.

It might help if you detailed exactly how you created this disk, from start to finish.

1.) the DVD-Video files has already been authored by a conversion software, meaning the Video_TS files have been prepared. Then I tested the playback using VLC and everything worked fine.
2.) using Nero Express 7, I created a new "DVD-Video" compilation by clicking on "DVD-Video Files."
3.) Clicked on "Add" button and selected all the files in the "Video_TS" folder. Pressed OK.
4.) Clicked on "Next".
5.) Clicked on "Burn."
6.) Tested the finished DVD-R on PC and everything worked fine.
7.) Tested the finished DVD-R on standalone/portable DVD players but no sound or audio.

Check your standalone's cable connections.

They're checked.
But I think I found the problem which is that the original DTS audio stream wasn't converted to AC3 codec. So maybe that's why the audio isn't playing on the standalones.
I want AC3 output, not DTS.

Hi!But I think I found the problem which is that the original DTS audio stream wasn't converted to AC3 codec. How would you expect that conversion to have occurred?
Just re-rip your original DVD and select the .AC3 or LPCM audiostream instead of the .DTS audiostream.
As far as I know, there's no such thing as a commercial standard DVD that has a .DTS audiostream but NOT an .AC3 or LPCM audiostream.
What is the Title and Region number of your original DVD?

@seatrip_old
AC3 is only mandatory on NTSC DVDs. Nonetheless, DTS alone is not allowed.
Discs containing 525/60 (NTSC) video must use PCM or Dolby Digital on at least one track. Discs containing 625/50 (PAL/SECAM) video must use PCM or MPEG audio or Dolby Digital on at least one track. Additional tracks may be in any format. See http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html#3.6.2

I don't know where the original DVD is @ atm but I remember it was an international DVD made by Hong Kong or some other region DVD (The Myth, I think.)
But I finally got it to work. This is what I did.
1.) Extracted DTS audio file/stream via standard DVD ripping program that is able to extract the DTS stream.
2.) Converted DTS file to a multi-channel wave file via Tranzcode by incorporating it's cl ("%1" /mch) into the file association's context menu.
3.) Converted 6ch WAV to 5.1 AC3 via Wav To AC3 Encoder.
4.) Converted the 5.1 AC3 to AC3 stereo via Besweet.
5.) Done!
Thanks for your input everybody!
