View Full Version : MPC frame-to-frame freezing

Yeah, I just remembered... I've been having a strange problem with MPC for god knows how long... While playing a file and then pausing it, using the right arrow key I go one frame at a time FORWARD. But when I do the same thing with the left arrow key on my keaboard, instead of going one frame at a time BACKWARDS, it just freezes until I kill the process through the Task Manager... LOL it sounds so funny :P
BTW FYI, I have the version 6.4.9.1
What could be the problem because I have been installing WinXP several times over and over again (of course, not because of THIS reason :P) but it's still the same

Depending on the type of frame (B), decoding it may require previous frames. When taking a step backwards, such information may no longer be present since the decoder assumed it was no longer needed. Simply said, most decoders don't support backwards frame steps. They only allows backwards seeking to keyframes.

What codec was the file encoded in? MPEG-2? H.264? Xvid? DivX? WMV? Something else?

@jeffy
Actually there are multiple files that don't work... H264, yeah, with both MP3 and AAC or M4A as audio stream, but I think I remember that a while ago I had the same problem with DivX as well (or was it XviD?)
@clsid
But I specificly remember that about a year ago it worked just fine... Maybe the x264 builds changed and it no longer works, perhaps. But that's just my guess...

I didn't say it won't ever work. I just gave a plausible explanation for the failure.
For me it works with AVI (Xvid/MP3) files. It doesn't work with MP4 (H.264/AAC). I don't get a freeze though, pressing left simply has no effect here.

Well, it doesn't really bother me since I don't use it so often, I was curious about what the problem was ;)
