I am trying to get something straight in my head so I can use it effectively. I notice that there appears to be 2 ratios for 16:9.

* 1.778 which seems to me to be the logical 16/9. However it is not Mod 16. I believe mod16 is important for encoders and achieving maximum compression, correct me if I am wrong please.

* 1.823 which is the ITU PAL 16:9, However Australia is leaving PAL to HDTV standard.

My Query I have older captures, TV in both 4:3 and 16:9 plus some cam footage I am capturing.

Going forward to be compatible with new standards, where should I look with the resolutions. Mostly clips will be stored and played on PC (widescreen LCD) but will be played on TV's and burnt to DVD.

I was going to use Web480x HD(480x270) standard but it is not divisible by 16. I am confused? Optimally I want to store in size no smaller than 352 and no larger than 512.

All standards and size specs I am reading from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_resolutions

Your thinking too much about things, leave them in the format they are in and when you want them on TV transcode them to 720x576 for PAL DVD......

HD is either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 which if you devide width by height they both equal 1.7777777777777777777777777777778 ar.

I wanted the clips to be consistent in size not have some 4:3 16:9 and anything else that may be possible.

It just seems strange when you look at post production standards that 16:9 web standards are not compatible with encoders divx x264 etc

That's because web content is not designed to conform to Video Standards, it's more about optimizing size for faster download's, and display in web browsers.....
