View Full Version : ImgBurn freezing

It appended to me once again :(

ImgBurn stalls at "Writing LeadIn..." and the drive appears idle. The burning process neither continues, nor can I abort it.
Since I cannot terminate the ImgBurn process, I cannot reboot or shutdown the system. Only RESET button helps.

This time I used the Win32 Nero Aspi Library, but it didn't help. Since it never happens with Nero, I suspect a problem in ImgBrun...

Any idea?

EDIT: And another time

I can't paste a log, because as soon as ImgBurn stalls, I can't start any other applications.
Also all running applications will die when they try to show a save/open dialog. So I was able to take a screenshot, but couldn't save it :scared:
But there weren't any interesting infos on the log anyway, no error messages or stuff...

Also I won't risk another burning attempt with ImgBurn, unless there is a very good reason :o

Seems that the IO subsystem is frozen. Perhaps a IO debug log can help. Press F8 and try again. Hopefully, you will be able to get the log (or part of it).

I can tell you that the program is not at fault. It's the drive that has control at that point.

Well, even if it's the drive's fault, the drive does not exhibit any problems when used by Nero. So ImgBurn must do something different.
Also keep in mind that a friend of mine has experienced the same problem, but he uses a different drive (but the same board and CPU).

Where exactly should I press F8 and where do I get that "IO debug log" from? You refer to the Windows "Safe mode" ???

:thanks:

EDIT: Okay, I got it. Pressing F8 in ImgBurn will trigger the IO Interface Debug Mode :D

ImgBurn stalls at "Writing LeadIn..." and the drive appears idle. The burning process neither continues, nor can I abort it.
Since I cannot terminate the ImgBurn process, I cannot reboot or shutdown the system. Only RESET button helps.

No, the system still appears responsive (in some way), but I can't create new processes and running processes freeze at certain actions.
Believe me, there is no way to restart or shutdown the system at this point. I have to press the RESET button...

I also tried "shutdown.exe /f /s" but no success either. As said by Blutach: "the IO subsystem is frozen"

Have you tried anything other than the 4x write speed that's selected in that log?

It's impossible to say at this point if the drive is hanging on the initial 'WRITE (10)' command or maybe one of the polling ones after that if the drive says it's busy. (That info isn't logged because it would be too slow)

You might find that the TAO write type works but then you're stuck with 2 second gaps between tracks.... who's to say which Nero is using!

If you want/need to do testing just use a rewritable or use test mode.

No, I did not. But I don't want to write faster for an Audio-CD. Do you think it's worth a try?

Hmm, there are tacks on that CD which MUST be burned without gap :o

If you want/need to do testing just use a rewritable or use test mode.

I have a fresh cakebox of 50 discs here, so that is not the problem. The biggest problem is the RESET :scared:

Is it possible that 4x is too slow? I don't think I've ever burned an audio CD at 4x, even when I still had the old 16x HP CD burner in use. Even now I routinely burn audio CDs at 24x using super-cheap media, many of which are still rolling around loose in the console of my car, and after as many as two years of summers and temps of up to 170° they all still play.

No, 4x is not too slow. I burned a lot of Audio CD's at that speed. And if you read audio magazines, they always recommend to not burn faster than 4x for audio.

Have you tried other media? Considered CD Digital Audio discs? (Designed for CD Recorders, and are different from "ordinary" CDs.)

Yes, I have encountered the problem with other media. Also with DVD, not only CD.

And the only difference between "Audio" CD-R's and "normal" CD-R's is that the "Audio" ones include an extra duty in their price. Some (most?) standalone CD-Recorders will only burn to "Audio" CD-R's, but that's it. On CD/DVD-Burners for PC you can use "normal" CD-R's for Audio-CD's just fine. In tests they even had better quality than "Audio" ones...

What are "audio" rated CD-R discs? Are they of higher quality?

Although there is no definition for "audio" CD-R discs, special audio discs designed for Consumer Audio Applications are used to copy commercial CD-Audio discs having copyrighted contents. They do not have any unique quality status. Such discs may not record in ordinary CD writers, only in special audio writers designated for Consumer Audio Applications. Ordinary CD-R discs will not record in such a writer. This is for the purpose of copyright protection, and special CD-R audio disc prices include copyright payments.

CWR03

I always suspected that of the specialized audio CDs. Really, it's still digital information on the disk, it's not like using a high-end cassette tape vs. a cheap one.

I only asked about 4x possibly being too slow because of prior posters having trouble burning DVDs at 1x, citing that they were told to burn at the slowest speed possible, but they're using media that does not support burning below 4x.

LoRd_MuldeR

I don't believe my problem is caused by wrong burning speed or bad media. I experienced the problem with several combinations.
Nevertheless a wrong burning speed shouldn't cause the entire system to hang! And I say it once again: Nero doesn't exhibit that problem...

uhm. install DVD FAB HD Decrypter. it comes with Patin-Couffin VSO "engine"...

Yes, Nero comes with it's own "Win32 Nero Aspi Library" (wnaspi32.dll). You can copy that one to ImgBurn directory and it will use Nero's lib.

That's what I tried after advice by LUK!, but no success...

OK, have you tried waiting? Give it an hour or so, this should be enough time to actually determine whether it's the drive access. If you can attach a debugger to ImgBurn.exe, and give the output, then that'd be fine. I assume, at this point, that you can still use the computer when it's writing the Lead-in?

LoRd_MuldeR
5th August 2008, 15:22
Yes, I tried waiting ...............

Well, I can still "use" the computer. But I can't create new processes, running processes will freeze at certain actions (e.g. Save/Open dialog) and I can not reboot or shutdown.

I doubt a debugger will deliver any useful information, since ImgBurn.exe doesn't crash or produce any errors. There also is an "I/O Interface Debug Mode" in ImgBurn (F8 key).

Inventive Software
5th August 2008, 16:20
Debugging will not necessarily track errors with ImgBurn, but the right one will track new threads created by the program, inputs and outputs, IO read/writes/others. I'd suggest GDB or, if you use MSVC, the MS debugger, but not being very well versed in debugging, I'm not sure what to look out for.

So it's a Patin-Couffin specific option. Since my problem is not Patin-Couffin specific (it also happens with ASPI and SPTI), I highly doubt that WOPC is the problem here...

Well, I found the option to disable WOPC on my BenQ drive. Rightclick on "Destination" drive and select "Change Advanced Settings".
But from what I read, WOPC seems to be a good thing. And I definitely won't mess with my drive's advanced settings, unless there is a very good reason.
Since I can burn just fine with another program (Nero) and I don't need to disable WOPC there, I doubt that is the problem...

@ Lord Mulder: I have the same drive as you -just older firmware- and I'm pretty sure the minimum write speed for CD-R is 8x. I tave tested it and burned a CD-R at 4x speed with ImgBurn. It did not work. Or rather: it did work but it just automagically selected the lowest possible burn speed for CD-R (8x) at which the burn process successfully finished.

It's a pretty old drive and it might not work with newer types of media. Mine does not work with Verbatim 8x speed DVD+R DL discs, the media is just not supported (too new).

If I look at your log I notice one thing different from my drive:

-----------------------------------------------------------
I 14:42:27 Destination Device: [4:0:0] BENQ DVD DD DW1620 B7W9 (G: ) (SCSI)

I 06:27:04 Destination Device: [1:1:0] BENQ DVD DD DW1620 B7T9 (E: ) (ATA)
-----------------------------------------------------------

My DVD writer is listed as ATA -I have an internal IDE drive- and yours as SCSI (well maybe you have an external version or something, it just seems noticable). I'm not an expert here, don't know if that could have any influence

And yes it's strange you don't get errors in Nero (I also have Nero 6.6 installed on my computer by the way and there are no conflicts)

Is there a reason your NERO log doesn't list "Exisitng drivers" (which could be important regarding your problem)?

Existing drivers:

Registry Keys:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

LoRd_MuldeR

I already tried burning at 8x in ImgBurn (as you can see on my screenshots) and it didn't change anything.
Also burning at an unsupported speed shouldn't cause the entire system to freeze, an error message would be adequate.

My S-ATA HDDs are detected as IDE devices (primary controller), while my IDE/ATAPI DVD-Burner is detected as SCSI device.
I think this is because the S-ATA controller is running in "legacy" mode, so the OS doesn't need to care about S-ATA.

What would you expect at "Existing drivers" ???

Bizarre that there are only two people that encounter this problem and I'm one of them. That's live...

Hi LoRd_MuldeR,

I just stumbled upon this thread, and I'd like to know if you tried previous versions of ImgBurn.

I have the same BenQ drive with identical firmware, and I still use ImgBurn 2.0.0.0. I did upgrade to newer versions a couple of times, but these newer versions always caused some problems so I went back to 2.0.0.0. And this version never ever gave me the slightest problem.

Just my two cents...

Cheers

Please, do us the favour and share your experiences with us.
How and when did the problems occur?

It was nothing major like LoRd_MuldeR experienced, just small annoying things. One time CLI mode did not work at all when automatic size calculation was checked. Another version had problems when "Verify after Write" was enabled. After cycling the tray the drive would mount the DVD, but no verifying would take place, the program just stalled. The burn was OK though.

And generally the default settings for ImgBurn are all optimized for interactive mode. In CLI mode all kinds of confirmation boxes requiring user interaction pop up all the time. Yes, you can disable these confirmations, but the settings are spread over many different tabs making it quite complicated.

Example: For the current version if you want to completely disable exporting graph data you have to change settings under 4 different tabs.

And since I am a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" I rather stick with my trusted version 2.0.0.0.

Cheers

Hi, this freezing also happens to me from time to time with my LG 4166B (IDE, standard Microsoft IDE driver). It's not so frequent, like 1 out of 20 burns, but it happens. Interesting thing is, that on the same system, my Samsung SH-S223Q (SATA, also standard Microsoft IDE driver*) works just fine and didn't freeze on me even once, and I already burned cca 140 discs with it.

As ImgBurn just freaks out if I install nVidia SATA driver - tested like 3 or 4 different versions of SATA driver (older normal and the newer AHCI versions) and it's always a complete disaster - bad burns, different kinds of sense errors etc., interestingly Nero and even cdrecord (quite surprising) work fine even in SATA mode.
