View Full Version : Why can't eac3to find Arcsoft DTS decoder?

I need some help!

I've just purchased Arcsoft Total Media Theater - mainly because I know that, combined with eac3to, I can get bit-perfect decoding of DTS MA audio tracks on Blu-Ray.

However, when I installed TMT and then ran the eac3to -test I get

"ArcSoft DTS Decoder doesn't seem to be installed"

I ran this test 10 times - always the same error message. I've run TMT with a BluRay disc with a DTS MA audio track to make sure it's working - it is. I can see the Arcsoft filters available within Graphedit (although I don't know how to use those filters in a graph yet).

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling TMT - didn't make any difference.

I'm currently using eac3to version 2.56 and the version of the TMT application shows as 2.1.6.120 (if that's useful to anyone). I am currently running WinXP + SP3, and even after searching the main eac3to thread from page 265 where others were experiencing issues getting eac3to & TMT to talk to each other I didn't find an answer that works for me.

I decided in desperation to post here as the main post is pretty huge as it is, but if anyone can help I would really appreciate it!

In GraphEdit build a graph which contains the ArcSoft "HD" Audio Decoder. Then save that to XML and post the contents of the XML file here.

Well, this is a bit weird. I set up the filter graph as follows...

File source (async) -> Arcsoft MPEG Demuxer -> Arcsoft Audio Decoder HD.

I managed to get the Arcsoft MPEG Demuxer into the graph OK, but when I selected the Arcsoft Audio Decoder HD to bring it into the graph I got the following error message...

The filter could not be created. Resources used by this filter may already be in use. Unspecified error (Return code: 0x80004005)

This is immediately after a reboot so there should be nothing left in memory.

Well, there you have the problem. If GraphEdit can't properly get an instance of that filter, so can't eac3to. You need to get this problem solved. Then eac3to will probably work, too. I'd suggest that you cleanup your temporary files folder. If that doesn't help, uninstall ArcSoft another time, then manually cleanup all ArcSoft related folders and then reinstall...

Well I guess that's one step forward - finding what the problem is, but the solution is ending up a bit harder to track down.

I did all you suggested - deleted all windows temp files/folders, rebooted, uninstalled TMT, looked for any instances of arcsoft anywhere and delete them (I did this, but it didn't leave much behind at all), reboot, re-install and reboot again......still no luck!

I'm trying to fish around the arcsoft forums but it looks like not many there use graphedit.

Any possible pointers are appreciated!!!

I've no idea what's going on. It seems to work for everyone else. Your last resort may have to be reinstalling Windows... :scared:

Are you guys having problems with any other filters? If not, then you should uninstall any codec packs you may have...unistall ArcSoft.....install CCCP....update Haali splitter....re-install Arcsoft...I would at least try this before anything too drastic like re-installing windows. I am using TME v1.0.6.29 without issue.

Did you check version numbers of the filter? It might be that Arcsoft restricted usage to only their applications on newer versions.

Yeah that too.....you need to have ArcSoft DTS decoder v1.1.0.0

I have to say that I don't really understand Dolby and DTS. I mean they get money from the manufacturers. They get money from the studios. They get money from ArcSoft, Nero and Cyberlink. What else do they want? Why do they still have to limit their decoders to only work with the specific media player the decoder came with? Do they want us end users to (indirectly) pay license fees to them again and again for every different piece of software we're using? All they'll get with such a restrictive and money gready attitude in the end is that some open source programmer will probably sooner or later reverse engineer their decoder and add the code to ffmpeg/libav...

The way I see it I simply want to buy a decoder from Dolby and DTS and then be able to use it with any DirectShow media player I like. But such an offer simply doesn't exist! That is a crazy business practise in my opinion because Dolby/DTS seem to do all they possibly can to build up motivation to reverse engineer their decoders...

If ArcSoft has really crippled their DirectShow decoder then once again there's no easy legal way for us end users to decode DTS-HD tracks in open source media players. That is really really a stupid idea by DTS.

[/rant]

Sure there is...just use the older versions of the decoders. Now that you have support for the ArcSoft decoders we should be fine with DTS-MA decoding for quite some time....Nero 7 is still good for DD+ decoding so I don't see why the ArcSoft v1.1.0.0 decoders won't be just as good for DTS-MA a year, two, or three down the line. Unless they make some drastic changes to the DTS-MA specs, which I doubt they will, we should be fine using this version. I understand your frustration but DTS/Dolby are in this for money and people like you and I are in this for fun...there's a big difference.

Roscoe62
31st July 2008, 23:56
Well, it would be useful to prove, one way or the other, that that is what's actually going on - i.e. - that Arcsoft have now made their decoders only available to their own applications, because at the moment we're only guessing that's what the problem is. I really hope that isn't the case, but we need to prove that first.

I will try to find out what I can from avsforums, but is anyone able to help me determine which version of the decoders I have? That'd be a good place to start.

BTW....Madshi, I agree totally with what you say. The fact remains that if it wasn't for talented and generous developers like you, I probably wouldn't have bothered with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD because I wouldn't be able to create movies in a format that are able to be played MY WAY, in the player of MY CHOICE. So again, thank you!

Find the .ax file for the filter, the version number should be mentioned in the file properties, just like for an exe or dll file.

Of course there are other reasons why the filter might not be working.

OK, I checked the dtsdecoderdll.dll file and the version no. shown there is 1.1.0.0 which I think is correct, right?

The ASAudioHD.ax file is showing version 1.3.2.60 - don't know if that's even relevant.

BTW - I went to the ArcSoft site and it appears the version I have is dated 29 July 2008, so it's very new. Again, I don't know if this is important or not.

Try adding this folder to your path environment variable.

c:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Bin

This worked for me.

I search for my files that are working properly and the dtsdecoderdll.dll is also 1.1.0.0. However my ASAudioHD.ax file version is 1.3.2.49. So yours is newer then mine, however mine works perfect in eac3to. What version of total media theater is it that you installed? The one I installed was 2.1.6.113.

EDIT: I just used eac3to and more GUI to test for external filters and it told me "ArcSoft DTS decoder (1.1.0.0) works fine" So I think that seems to be the correct version number but I dont know if that other file has anything to do with it.

Roscoe62
1st August 2008, 11:38
Yep, the version I'm running is 2.1.6.120 which, as I stated earlier, was only released on 29th July. Obviously the dtsdecoderdll file hasn't changed but the ASAudioHD.ax file has been updated.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else using the newer version is able to get it working successfully in eac3to.

....I'm gonna be really bummed if I paid US$90 on a NON-WORKING version, and only missed the working version by 2 days!!

Does the PATH thing not work?
One of the reasons why a filter might be registered just fine but doesn't load properly is failing to load dependencies (like dtsdecoderdll.dll). The PATH thing might be the solution for that.

As a next step I would download Process Monitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx), set it up to only display messages from eac3to and check the log if some dll doesn't load.

i have just installed "Arcsoft Total Media Theater Intro Version":

http://base.arcsoft.com/downloads/intro/arcsoft_totalmediatheatre_engintro.exe

it is 15 days trial version of "Total Media Theater" version 2.1.6.113 with limited functionality and then updated to latest 2.1.6.120 version using:

http://www.arcsoft.com/downloads/digitaltheatre/arcsoft/totalmediatheatre_2.1.6.105_2.1.6.120_Update_ALL.exe

and eac3to version 2.56 works without any issues.

so, either a) 2.1.6.120 web update is different than 2.1.6.120 retail version or b) your Windows is just broken and needs reinstall.

in case a) you can also try with "Total Media Extreme":

http://base.arcsoft.com/downloads//tbyb/totalmediaextreme_retail_trial_e.exe

is it Try and Buy version that can be registered and contains "Total Media Theater" version 2.1.6.110 + other software. i'm almost sure that your "Total Media Theater" license will work to register the "Total Media Theater" part of "Total Media Extreme". then just update to "Total Media Theater" version 2.1.6.113 using the following web update:

http://base.arcsoft.com/downloads/totalmediaextreme/arcsoft/TotalMediaExtreme_1.0.6.23_1.0.6.29_Update_ALL.exe

if again it doesn't work it should be your Windows. good luck!

LOL reinstalling Windows just because a filter doesn't work? There must be a better explanation than that, I'm pretty sure the method I described above will make it clear.

i don't know about that, i just wanted to confirm that version 2.1.6.120 works with eac3to or at least the one from the web update, maybe the retail is different and is causing the problem. actually 2.1.6.120 works with GraphEdit too - on my system ASAudioHD.ax is version 1.3.2.60 and it loads in GraphEdit.

Roscoe62
1st August 2008, 23:36
do you have any codec packages installed?

Nope, I tend to only install what I need, and no more - so I'm not really keen on installing codec packages.

xkodi, thanks for trying out the latest version for me. Even though you've only got the trial version, I don't think there's any fundamental difference between the trial and retail versions so I'm a bit relieved that my version is now not likely to be the issue.

menno, I will try the path thing - it's not something I've played with much so I don't know how effective it's going to be, but at this stage I'm willing to give it a shot. I haven't seen a way to ADD a path though - only to change the existing one. Is that what you're talking about?

Failing that it's looking like I might need to re-install windows - yecch!

I usually dont like codec packs but I always end up installing the latest version of the klite mega codec pack and it has never done me wrong. The reason I was asking because i thought that maybe some codec pack was interfering but you don thave any installed so I dont know now.

Roscoe62
2nd August 2008, 02:24
Well,

I guess it pays to experiment a little. Tried adding the path thing - it didn't make any difference.

I then uninstalled my Arcsoft and made sure I got rid of any folders left over. I even went into the registry and found some references there to Arcsoft, so I deleted them. Then I rebooted. Then I downloaded the trial version, as xkodi said he did, and loaded that. After the next reboot I executed the eac3to -test command and whaddaya know? It found it and said it was working properly! I then downloaded the update patch (to bring it up to the full 2.1.6.120 version), rebooted again, and eac3to was again able to find it OK.

I know I'm only running the trial version, but at least that works. I might see if a nag screen comes up whether I can just register it manually.

I'm glad it's now working, but that is seriously weird!!

Can Madshi or someone simply provide a manual way and the names of the needed files + Optimal Location ?

I think itīs an overkill to install a complete Package with "Phone-At-Home" Functions, destroy your working Merrits from exiting codecs and add a whole bunch of new Autostart and Backgroundshit that no one needed on a working installation :(

I think 1 or 2 Decoder.dllīs, the .ax Decoder-File and the obligate msvc*.* dllīs. and a few regsvr32 calls is enough when only the Audio-Part is needed ?

I understand you. However, doing what you suggested might increase illegal use of ArcSoft (or Nero or Cyberlink or ...) software because licensing protection might be circumvented. Because of that I prefer to require the installation of the full software suite. Only that way I can feel safe using those decoders from within eac3to. I don't want ArcSoft, Nero, Cyberlink etc to have any reason to be angry with me. Actually I'd be happy if eac3to increased sales of ArcSoft, Nero and Cyberlink software...

More reason to hope and ask for better support for the various HD-audioformats in the libavcodecs imho. That would completely eliminate the need for bloatware and "illegalware".

nVidia owners,

I've found the way of watching VC1 files with arcsoft video decoder on MPC-HC.

If your demuxer is haali, you can't get rid of DMO; so you have to uninstall haali first.

Set the merit of the arcsoft mpeg demux to 008000FF.

Untick "MPEG/PS/TS/PVA" and "Matroska" under "Source Filters" and "VC1 dxva", "VC1 ffdmpeg" under "Transform Filers" of intenal filters option,

Select "arcsoft video decoder" and "arcsoft audio decoder hd" and set their merits "prefer" under external filters option.

Enjoy.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/3254/vc1kc1.th.png (http://img375.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vc1kc1.png)

http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7354/mpcgraphuo3.th.png (http://img209.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mpcgraphuo3.png)

2.1.6.121 but it's not up to SVN.

Have you uninstalled Haali?

The chain should be:

File Source (Async) > arcsoft mpeg demux > arcsoft video decoder > EVR (or VMR)

Don't forget haali is not a splitter alone but a source filter as well which means even you decrease the merit of haali to "unlikely" it is again gonna be the selected source filter.
Why?
The filters which are combined as source+splitter will always be selected as default even their merits are set to "no use".
So you'd better uninstall haali.

Lets say you made arcsoft demux your default filter and trying to render a file with graph (i mean "file" > "render media file") while haali is still loaded.

What happens?

_ _ _ _ _

My TMT is the latest 2.1.6.121 . No tweak on TMT under Vista32 SP1. Eac3to automatically selects Arcsoft dts decoder and all it's filters can be used easily on GraphEdit/GraphStudio.

EDIT: BTW i bought TMT at 113 build and always updated; never even lived any issues.

Actually I'd be happy if eac3to increased sales of ArcSoft, Nero and Cyberlink software...

I kinda find that hard to do when they lock their codecs and only let their programs access them, no?

I have Nero 7 installed and would love to upgrade to nero 8 but I simply do not want to lose the ability to decode ac3 from eac3to, so I am stuck at nero 7.

I am also having troubles getting the arcsoft decoders to work outside of the TMT environment. When I run eac3to -test, I get "ArcSoft DTS Decoder doesn't seem to be installed". Im running 3.04 of eac3to, and just purchased TMT (the download gave me .126).

So how does eac3to decide if TMT is installed? Does it have anything to do with these 2 lines from a Process Monitor output:

5:20:13.4001806 PM eac3to.exe 5220 QueryOpen C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Bin\RPAWINET.DLL FAST IO DISALLOWED

I have already tried adding Program files\common files\arcsoft\bin to the path before running eac3to -test. I have also tried copying the 4 mag*.dll files into the eac3to folder from arcsoft.

I firmly believe its not a eac3to problem since graphstudio doesnt list any of the arcsoft codecs in its directshow list, but am hoping someone knows what I need to do to fix.

Any help greatly appreciated.

here are some things to try....#2 should work always.

1. Add to the PATH envirnonment variable in XP C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Bin

2. Goto C:\Program Files\ArcSoft\TotalMedia Theatre\Codec and open DOS window and enter
regsvr32 ASAudioHD.ax

Or goto Start and then Run and copy:

regsvr32 C:\Program Files\ArcSoft\TotalMedia Theatre\Codec\ASAudioHD.ax hit enter!!!

#2 should work in MOST if not ALL cases.

3. do #2 above for arcdemux.ax, asaudio.ax, asudioeffecthd.ax, and asaudiohd.ax of #2 alone does
not work

4. Copy MagCore.dll, MagPCMac.dll, MagUIEngine.dll and
MagUIInter.dll from Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Bin\ to eac3to\ (last item to try)

BUMP!

Same problem here. Info:

-Vista 64
-Works fine in GraphStudio
-Envrionment variables (path, even pathext) changed, no avail
-files copied into eac3to dir (from \mpeg engine, \codec , \bin)
-manually registered all files (using 32bit regsvr32 from \windows\syswow64, can't with the native 64bit regsvr32 since the codecs and eac3to are 32bit)
-TotalMedia Extreme/Theater works fine (plays all files, etc)
-All ArcSoft codecs show up in installedcodec utility, zoomplayer, etc. Arcsoft codecs even work within Zoomplayer
- -test output:
C:\encoding\video\eac3to>eac3to -test
eac3to (v3.12) is up to date
Nero Audio Decoder (Nero 7) works fine
ArcSoft DTS Decoder (1.0.2.2) is not working correctly
http://www.arcsoft.com/products/totalmediatheatre
Sonic Audio Decoder (3.12.0.0) doesn't seem to be installed
Haali Matroska Muxer (2009-01-10) is installed
There's a new version (2009-01-11) available
http://haali.net/mkv
Nero AAC Encoder (1.3.3.0) is up to date
Surcode DTS Encoder doesn't seem to be installed
http://www.surcode.com
MkvToolnix (2.5.1.0, release version) is up to date

I don't have Surcode or Sonic, so those are reading right.

Any Ideas? Please... any help would be greatly appreciated!
