View Full Version : GK and OpenDML AVI?

Is there any chance that Gordian Knot, or any of the other tools besides xmpeg, will be able to produce OpenDML AVIs? I'm no fan of xmpeg, but I'd like to be able to produce AVIs > 2 GB.

I'm not 100% sure what you want but i think you mean the 2GB barrier of FAT32?

well, just use Win2k or XP that provide NTFS which can handle huge files

why?

your os?

I'd like AVIs greater than 2GB because I am using DVD-R's for the target medium and not CD's. Since I can store up to 4.7GB, I'd like not to be restricted to just 2GB. One of the general Doom9 FAQs stated that the regular AVI format itself was limited to 2GB and only the extensions provided by OpenDML AVIs (producable with xmpeg) could overcome this limitation.

your os?

did you try if it works without?

if it doesn't, don't you think it might be better (for compatibility reason) to use smaller (say 1gig, like on a dvd) files and burn them along with a playlist?

btw: gknot doesn't handle avis itself, it completely depends on the encoders (nandub, vdub). so if they can't write "OpenDML AVIs" (i never heard of that before) gknot can't.

I apologize that I didn't try before asking the question, but I didn't want to waste the time when the FAQ said it couldn't be done:

http://www.doom9.org/faq.htm#2gb-2

I have W2K and using NTFS so the OS shouldn't hold me back. But I interpret the FAQ answer to mean that the AVI format itself cannot handle > 2GB without the OpenDML extensions.

Sorry I targeted this as a GK question. You're right it's more a VirtualDub / AVISynth question.

Edit:

I reread that FAQ again. Is it that the AVI format cannot reach > 2GB unless using OpenDML AVI AND the OS can support it. Or is it saying the native AVI format cannot support it unless the OS can and then the AVI can?

At first I thought the former. Then suddenly I considered the latter. But it must be the former because OpenDML AVI or not, if the OS doesn't do > 2GB, it aint going to happen. So okay, my question remains (although not necessarily for GK).

About the larger files than 1GB on dvd-r
I have a dvd-r and the files that you burn on them that are bigger than 1 gb will not be readeble.
wanted you to know.
I did 3 movies on one DVD-R with 1496 mb each.
and I burned them after the burn was successfull I was not able to read the files.

AFAIK, the standard output fileformat in vdub is OpenDML AVI, you only get the old avi format if u select 'save old format avi'.

Correct me if I'am wrong.

Kandor:
Do you remember what tool you use to make the AVIs? And what operating system? Thanks!

Doh! You're right. I'm an ass. I'm glad you caught that before I posted the same question in the vdub forum and made an ass of myself again!
