View Full Version : Using different bitrates on the 1st and 2nd pass

So let's say I changed my mind about the bitrate I wanted to use, and just finished the first pass.
Would it matter if I used the same stats file for a second pass with a different (higher) bitrate?

I know this is probably a very stupid question, but I figured I should ask anyway.

AFAIK bitrate should stay the same or may slightly change (that means very little change)

Yes it is because you should've figured to :search:

Yes, the bitrate can change, but don't change it too much (1,000 to 10,000 might be a bad idea, for example).

Sorry Avenger ;-; I try, but I forget a lot :\

Thanks DS - I thought Sharktooth's "slightly" meant 20-50kbps... but now I know I can bump it up about 150-200kbps :p

the less the difference the better...

Well, then, what are the negative effects of changing it too much?

Well, then, what are the negative effects of changing it too much?Worse ratecontrol. x264 already has to compensate for a difference in effective bitrate between the two passes since you're using different settings, so it can handle reasonable changes--there's no guarantee it will work that well for extremely large changes though.

Well, that's not such a bad thing. I kinda stopped caring about filesize when I added that 150kbps.
