I'm referring more and more of my friends to this incredible site, and at the same time having to email them a "guide" I wrote to describe the process - what they are doing (not how to do it). The reason for this is that I've found they expect ripping DVD's to be as easy as MP3's, and they don't realize there is so much going on (some hidden, like with Flask). After an hour discussion explaining what each tool does and why, they usually ask for it in writing.

The suggestion is to add a guide(s) into the DVD Basics area that is a brief overview of compressing DVD's. It would mention briefly the stores on DVD's, the film formats, why they're important, and the compression process (including decryption, video resize/crop/compression, audio convert/compression, video & audio combining, and any fine-tuning that may be required).

The thought was that a 2-3 page document that covered WHAT is happening would help when a process say - in FLASK or VirtualDub breaks. Then they'd know where to look in here for help, what to ask, or whatever. I purposely avoid mentioning tools specifically, since they are ever growing and may be combined, replaced, or outdated. It would be a worthy appendage to your "Newbie" guide. It's one thing to follow a list of instructions and get a good output. It's another thing to know what in the world you just did. :-)

Any thoughts?
