View Full Version : Good H.264 Decoder?
What's a good H.264 decoder w/ DxVA compatibility ?
Thanks !

and this is encoding subforum That's not true. This forum is about all aspects of MPEG-4 AVC, excluding the GUIs, which have their own subforum.

but the "parent" is "Video Encoding".
however ffdshow is free and pretty good (it is also able to decode other formats and apply on-the-fly filters...). coreavc is not free but good and blazing fast. there are also quite a few other good decoders but those 2 IMHO are the main choices. im assuming you're using Windows...

So where would you put a thread about AVC decoding? Just curious.

here, obviosly. my comment pointed out the fact "Vide Encoding" maybe needs to be changed in "Video Encoding and Decoding".

But they don't support DxVA :(

Take a look to Media Player Classic Home Cinema, it comes with an integrated H.264 decoder which supports DxVA :)
I'm pretty sure that the decoder is distributed as a separate package too.
(so, maybe, this thread could become be more relevant to the Software Player forum :p)
I just use software decoders like ffdshow for encoding with MeGUI not playing.
Yes, MPC-HC's decoder is good, but what about cyberlink decoder?
Is there anyway for using DxVA instead of ffdshow during the encoding?
EDIT: Is MeGUI + DxVA HD HQ best way for encoding the incompatible DxVA files?
Thanks a lot!

Please have a look at forum rule #12 (again ....) ;)
You've been given at least one suggestion; you're proposing an alternative (cyberlink). Now I think it's your turn to ask your eyes, your CPU and your wallet which one suits you better :)

dont ask whats best (as per forum rules).
DXVA presets are compatible with all DXVA decoders unless they're broken.
The MPC-HC internal DXVA decoder should be also available as a standalone DS filter. have a look here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=170561&package_id=264678

I've no more money and no more time to test all of the H.264 decoders/encoders.
I just have MPC-HC w/ Cyberlink as decoder and MeGUI (x264) as encoder. I'll really be thankful if you guide me to get a good H.264 decoder/encoder !
Price doesn't matter. Unfortunalty there's no comparision between the decoders/encoders. so I can't decide.
I don't ever see the rule #12 in other forums.
I'm sure you can help me. I just want to encode my H.264 files and play them with DXVA. But the quality is very important for me !
EDIT: sorry for my eng

Anyways...
x264 is, without a doubt, the top H.264 encoder. The fastest H.264 decoder would be the beta DivX decoder, but the fastest stable one is CoreAVC. libavcodec, part of ffdshow, is usually considered the top free decoder. Try ffdshow, if things are still slow, get CoreAVC or wait for DivX.

he stated he wants DXVA.
actually there are not much DXVA decoders.
MPC-HC decoder is free, cyberlink is payware. those are the only 2 that comes to my mind right now.

Quality wise it shouldn't make a difference wich DXVA decoder gets used also speedwise it wont probably make a big difference when BSP mode is used last comparision i did showed this at least chroma quality and the rest is the same and defined by the GPU and Driver not the decoder itself. The biggest issue i think is more interoperability (dshow layer) then Quality as Quality the Hardware (and what controls the Hardware (Driver,Shader Engine)) defines here not the Decoder Software :)

1) With DXVA "best" have no signification because GPU make hardware decoding.
2) With pure software decoding "best" have signification. The best decoder is the fastest.

the word "best" has no meaning as per forum rules. there is no best about anything.
"best" is subjective and "best" decoders being the fastest is plain wrong.
everyone has his preferences. maybe the "best" for me is ffdshow even if it's slower than coreavc coz my CPU is fast enough and just because it has a tons of post processing options coreavc doesnt have and it's free.
everyone has his own "best". "best" is subjective. you cant just generalize it. best for you is different than best for me.
the "best" encoding does not exist since i may like one kind of encoding more than another. for another person may be completely different.
also theres no measure for "best", that means you cant measure what's better, you have to judge with your own criterias.
for that reason there's no best quality... etc..
IMO, the best encoder/decoder provides more quality than other. Speed doesn't matter.
Here's my H.264 setup:
DxVA Decoder: MPC-HC (EVR Custom for enabling subtitle) -> Cyberlink PDVD8 H.264 AVC
Encoder: MeGUI (DXVA HD HQ) -> x264 -> ffdshow during the encoding
@Ranguvar: I'll pay for the best decoder and encoder.
EDIT: @Sagittaire: I can see the difference between DxVA Microsoft MPEG2 decoder and DxVA Cyberlink PDVD8 MPEG2 decoder !

you dont listen. there's no "best".
quality is the same for all h.264 decoders. if they're not then they're not compliant to the standard.
also, as i already said, even quality is subjective...

OP keeps asking for best in violation of rule 12, so thread closed.
