I recorded a number of Halo 3 game videos onto a DVD with my Panasonic DVD recorder, and I have ripped them to my computer using Handbrake.

For some reason, the ripped videos have strange scan line type artifacts when there is a lot of horizontal movement. It's also evident in explosions and other bright lights.

Is there a way to get rid of this, or some way to avoid it? Thanks.

It's called interlacing, and it's how most devices record content, load you video into AVIDemux (preferably the DVD Source) and try a variety of deinterlacers, yadiff often has good results on captured content like this, the reason i suggest AVIDemux is because you can preview the results before you encode.

If you want to learn about Video Encoding especially if you have captured it from a device like a DVD Recorder, then you should learn about interlacing and get comfortable with it as it is not uncommon and certainly not strange as you implied.

Wow! Just running the video through AVIDemux with yadif on default settings made a huge difference.

2 more things you may want to do is crop, and resize.

Crop till there are no black borders left or right, then take 2 pixels off the top and 2 off the bottom.

Resize down to something like 688x516, it will make the video look abit better.

Do these in AVIDemux, in the following order, deinterlace, crop, resize.
