Is it possible to use the DivX H.264 decoder as the default decoder for Mpeg-4 AVC in VLC media player? I have no problem getting it to work in mpc but i think VLC uses its own internal codecs? If this is not possible please say so.
Thanks in Advance!

nope... AFAIK VLC does not rely on DirectShow.

But it's possible, if you try VLC 0.9 (actually you can only get it by compiling yourself or with nightly builds), this version can use the codecs installed on your PC.
But it's highly unstable.

to get this version go here : http://nightlies.videolan.org

i hope they make a lot of changes before releasing this. and why did we have to change the wonderfully simple and clean gui?

So true!

They switched the toolkit from wxWidgets to Qt, thus the new interface style...

But why in the world should VLC support "external" decoders? The good thing about VLC is that it works "out of the box" without any DirectShow dependencies

I really hope they don't screw it up...

Because despite all the improvements in ffmpeg, nothing beats coreavc and wmv9 for playing AVCHD/HD discs on older and mid-range systems, or the DXVA codecs. Especially with interlacing.

And VLC is often also criticized about its bad subtitle support.

VMW decoder is slow as hell. On my PC with windows, i use ffdshow to decode VC-1 coz it's faster than M$ decoder (coz they done optimize for old CPUs... go figure...).
