Hi Gents
My first post! I am extremely old so no shouting at me if the topic has been covered a thousand times before (I have used the search facility with no avail!).
I plucked up the courage to go paragliding (tandem) in Turkey and bought the obligatory dvd they took in VOB format and also took some great footage myself on my camera. I converted both files to avi with GK and tried to edit/merge files using Pinnacle studio9 but when I tried to do this I was met with the error message "cannot add 29.97 fps scene to 25.00 project" I have tried to convert both files to the same fps (using the ctrl/f9) but all I get is the same fps as they started out...how can I do this please?:thanks::thanks:

Hi again,
Do I take it that it is not possible to use GK to change fps (due to lack of response):)
I downloaded DGPulldown to attempt the change but I only get a windows message that "DGPulldown needs to close etc" every time I attempt any operation with this program, any suggestions (apart from "take up knitting"!

DGPulldown works on MPEG2 elementary streams, not AVI files.
What is the frame rate and format of the file from your camera? Before you process it!
Is the DVD PAL (25fps) or NTSC (29.97fps)?
What is the desired frame rate and format for your final product?

Judging by that error you have started a PAL project in Pinacle but are trying to load NTSC content into it, try creating a NTSC project then add your content!
You may want to avoid converting a DVD to avi then loading it into authoring software, everytime you encode it you loose quality....
Try loading the VOB files directly into AVIDemux and do all the editing you need to in that, im going to assume you will need to deinterlace first, so click the filters button and add a deinterlacer, try a few of them to find the best results.
Or
Try This (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/285384#1634743) Thread
PS you shouldn't need to mess around with frame rates, unless you have PAL content with NTSC DVD player's or vice versa.

Hi Neuron2 & Dat720
thanks for the reply.
the camera file is in video compression PVMJPG at 30fps (presume 29.97?) and the vob file is 25. trying to get either both 29.97 or 25 so as to edit/stream the files together in pinnacle studio.

Hi Dat720
pinnacle recognises both files and would allow me to edit independantly but not together due to the different fps, so if I could convert both files to the same fps I should be able to firkle (edit) the files and merge project

Let's get the VOB to 29.97. Extract the M2V and audio from the VOB using DGIndex. Then use DGPulldown to convert the M2V using 25->29.97. Then remux the M2V and the audio using Imago muxer. Now you have an MPG at 29.97 that you should be able to use instead of the VOB.
Now both files will be effectively interlaced, so keep that in mind during the subsequent editing and rendering.

Sorry, didn't realise you we're dealing with 2 different sources.

Hi Neuron2
Got as far as converting using dgpulldown and on trying to convert I still get the windows error message "dgPulldown.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close etc" I have re downloaded prog twice with same results, is there a glitch with the latest version and not compatible with xppro?
Many thanks for your tolerance

What version of DGPulldown are you using and what is the exact name of the input file?

Hi Neuron2
version is latest 1.0.11
and file is "C:\videock\VTS_01_1.d2v"
I get same response whatever settings I choose, I only run the standard windows firewall along with mcafee so should be no problem there?

I told you it works on MPEG2 elementary streams, i.e., M2V files.
Open the VOB in DGIndex and then do Save Project and Demux Video. You'll get an M2V file. That is the one you apply pulldown to, not the D2V file!

Hi Neuron2
many thanks for your continued help and patience! Could not at first find a save file format M2v only D2v and "all files" in dgindex but got there eventually, Have completed and checked out saved video on powerdvd and works ok, (pinnacle only shows black file shots however and will not play, but I think there may be a few tweaks and firkles to be made to get there!)
Again, many thanks, it must be very tiresome to have to revert to the "idiot mode" when dealing with complete novices? I have saved all your messages for future usage, I enjoy a challenge but to jump in with both feet when you only understand every other word is quite daunting but we got there eventually.....cheers

Hi DAT720
Thanks also for your input, didnt mean to cause conflict but was looking for different ways to rectify my problem. When you get to the wrong side of 60 you get the impression you really should leave "techie" things to you youngsters, but what the heck!

Nonsense. That's just what they want you to think so you have to come to them for help. Just keep on learning.

It's never too late to learn....
My father never used a computer in his life till he was over 50, and now he is using them all the time, he now has a laptop and a desktop pc, 2 printers and what seems like a ton of usb memory sticks, this from a man who while i was growing up always said he was never going to learn computers, has no interest and never will......
Things change when your in the right mindset, if you don't want to learn, then you won't learn, i love learning new things and taking on new challenges, i knew nothing about VB when i started my new job in feburary and now with no training i am the unofficial automater of tasks!!! i have several tailor made 1000+ line script's for things we need in our office! you just have to dive in and give it a go! you don't learn by making somone else do it, you learn from trial and error..... nuf said

Let's get the VOB to 29.97.I disagree - he's in the UK - he needs "PAL" (25fps). Plus the DVD content is probably better quality than the M-JPEG file from his (digital stills?) camera, and is probably interlaced, so the conversion might as well be carried out on the lower quality (and hopefully progressive, hence more easily converted) source.
As for 30fps>25fps (50i) easily, I don't know - I'd do it through AVIsynth, but there must be a more newbie friendly way - AVIdemux maybe? It'll resample the fps, change the size, and encode to whatever format you want, all through the GUI.
I'd either make it MPEG-2, and then edit the two (now compatible MPEG-2) streams using something like VideoReDo; or I'd make everything DV AVI, and edit it in virtually any consumer video editing package (e.g. the one he's using).
EDIT: AVIdemux seems to work fine converting the video. I added filters to change the frame size to 720x576, the frame rate to 25fps, the audio to 16-bit 48kHz, encoded to DV-AVI with LPCM audio.
Cheers,
David.

I disagree - he's in the UK - he needs "PAL" (25fps) The OP clearly said:
trying to get either both 29.97 or 25
So I gave him the easier conversion.
