View Full Version : Cutting MKV into parts - results stutter

I have a large h264 1080p mkv, that I would like to cut into pieces that fit single layer DVDs for backup.

Using mkvtoolnix (mkvmergegui) I've done this before without glitches, but this particular mkv is stubborn.

I tried removing audio streams, subtitle streams, various part sizes, the result is always the same. Parts 2 and 3 have occasional picture jumps, that are not in the original. They're highly annoying and perfectly repeatable. Audio plays fine without glitches.

Is there anything I can try to make this work, or another software that I can try?

Hi!

Perhaps you should instead re-rip the original source material (presumably an HD-DVD or BluRay disc) in three parts, before converting to .MKV?

Now there's an idea :) Still, that would take a very long time, so if there's a solution to apply to the finished mkv, I would prefer it.

I have no idea if this will work, but it may be worth a try. You can always try to mux the mkv into a m2ts file with tsMuxer and then split. I have never used it in this way, but it does have a tab for it. You can then leave it in the m2ts format, or convert back to mkv via m2ts->gdsmux->mkvmerge.

Thanks, I'll give it a try when I again have this issue!

I'll give it a try when I again have this issue! So, how did you resolve the situation THIS time?

I followed your advice (or attempted to) with unsatisfactory results and, lacking time, shelved this particular issue for later perusal.

But I did get a lot less (almost none) jumps when using AVImux GUI, so I dusted this oldie off and will use it now again over MKVtools.
