I have an AVI that is encoded in dx50 (divx). I want to make an M2V from it so I can put it into IFOEdit and make a DVD.
How can i save my avi into M2V? I tried using FFDShow encoding with MPEG2 and then renaming the new .avi file as .m2v, but that didn't work.. Any help?

Open your source AVI file in Avidemux (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=126164), run the "Auto -> DVD" wizard and finally save the video!
VirtualDub can only create AVI files. Renaming the ".avi" file to ".m2v" won't change that fact.
Also MPEG-2 in AVI is not a good idea ;)

you make it sound like me putting MPEG2 in AVI is like a blonde putting white-out all over a computer screen.
Ill try not to commit such blunders in the future. Thank you.

Note that Avidemux will set the output format to "MPEG-PS" when you run the "Auto -> DVD" wizard.
This will create an MPEG Program Stream (PS), containing an video and an audio stream. Usually saved as ".m2p" or ".mpg" file.
If you want an MPEG-2 Elementary Stream, which contains video only, simply change "Format:" to "MPEG Video". This is usually saved as ".m2v" file.
Alternatively you can split the Program Stream at any time and demux the Elementary Stream...

i opened the avi file and chose auto-dvd and the left hand dropdown video and audio remained the same ("Copy") I then changed the Format dropdown to "Mpeg Video" and saved and it well, nothing worked :/
the file was http://www.amv-france.com/AMV/concours/87/Nostromo_-_Auriga_720p@60.avi
the http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/etc/adm_wink/avi2dvd.htm flash tutorial shows the columns automatically changing, but when i open this file and use auto-DVD nothing changes

The left side menu should change when you run "Auto -> DVD" and press OK.
It will change to "Video: DVD (lavc)" and "Audio: MP2 (TwoLame)" and "Format: MPEG-PS (A+V)"
What is the Framerate of your source video ???

Most likely this is because your source AVI has a none-standard framerate, neither 25 fps (PAL) nor 29.97 (NTSC).
In that case you'll have to add the "Resample FPS" filter manually in the Filter Manager before running the "Auto -> DVD" wizard.
Depending on what country you live in, you should either resample to 25 fps or 29.97 fps...
EDIT:
Looking at your link, the "@60" indicates 60 fps. You'll have to resample that to 29.97 fps (NTSC) to make it DVD compliant.
