For years, I've been using DVDDecrypter for my backup needs. As I am now about to some some new DVDs, I'd like to upgrade and therefore would like to know what ripper is being the standard recommendation here.

Almost all of us used DVD Decrypter but were forced to look for alternatives as it failes on many new discs. There is AnyDVD which is not free and there is RipIt4Me and DVDFab HD Decrypter, hard to tell which one is more reliable, both fail on some discs and both don't have a IFO mode so depending on the DVD structure you'll have to tinker with tools like PgcDemux, vStrip GUI and DVD Shrink.

Hi!
Just read the applicable postings in the many threads here in the "Decrypting" sub-forum - Or as "Newbies" are advised, "Use Search" ;>}

I would recommend DvdFab here:

stax: thanks for the recommendations. AnyDVD is not too expensive, so I'll give the trial a go.
setarip_old: none of the thread titles in these two pages seemed to talk about anything other than HDDVD and BluRay ripping, so I assumed there was no info there. I didn't know that DVDFab HD Decrypter was meant to work on SD DVDs too :o. As for searching, a subject so generic like "recommended DVD ripper" would have yielded too many results to browse in a reasonable amount of time.
linyx: thanks for the recommendation, I'll try that one as well.

You can still continue to us DVDDecrypter just run AnyDVD in the background. It's what I've been doing for years since LightingUK got slapped by Macrovision and I haven't had one problem with regular DVD's old or new.

It would be still alive if LightingUK was smart enough to either make it open source or if he put the decss part into a external module. Almost any DVB application supports illegal decryption using external DLLs.

True I believe that LUK! has allowed the MPAA too much power over him. Personally I think his legal advice is moronic...
I still use use DvD Decryptor w/ Anydvd so I can rip in all modes available.
Just know AnyDVD only cost once with a lifetime of free Updates...

I wonder if AnyDVD decreases the speed of DVD Decrypter much?

No, the raw transfer speed is still the bottleneck, even on very high speed DVD drives. Also let's keep on topic, it's about recommended decryptors and not their creators.

As well, ignorant comments about what actually happened to DVD Decrypter and LUK are not appreciated.

I have NOTHING but respect for LUK and always have. Sorry if I offended :(

I use AnyDVD, and then DVD Shrink with no re-compression, because that allows me to rip just the main movie, and the audio and subs I want :)
I believe DVD Decrypter creates bad IFOs... some apps don't like them.

@Epiph0ne - my comment was not directed at you - you certainly did not offend. The 2 posts following yours, however, were more than just ignorant IMO.

True - since 2006 I have never had any problems with DVD Fab nor DVD Shrink. Hooking ImgBurn up to DVD Shrink is a doddle as well.
Also AnyDVD is well worth the money if you wish to dabble in HD =)
