I start up and encode, i set bitrate 400. two pass (average bit)

But when i encode the bitrate goes past 5000+ and i get a whopping 100mb file in like 2 mins.

Is it my understanding that Avidemux has its own built in codecs so its not a problem with other encoders installed i.e megui, bencos, v-dub.

I dont know what could be causing this problem and cant seem to find any fix.

I can provide all information if you need it.

Yes, Avidemux uses only it's built-in encoders/decoders. Therefore other software installed on your system can't cause problem.
Since you did not say which encoders you used (video and audio) and how exactly you configured both, it's hard to help you

But keep in mind:
Even if you select 400 kbps as average bitrate, the bitrate might go much higher (or much lower) for some parts of your encode.
That's the whole idea of 2-Pass. Give much bitrate to "complex" scenes and give few bitrate to less complex scenes.

Also note that the bitrate displayed during the first pass of a 2-Pass encode doesn't say anything, since no output file is created.
The actual output file will be created later, in the second pass....

Did you wait for the 2-Pass encode to finish and was the average bitrate of the final output file okay or too high ???

nope sorry i did not wait, after seeing a 100mb file in less than 2 mins i closed it down. i dont have much HD space so i guessed i should better stop before my pc slows/freezes

used codecs x264 and aac for audio.
I used to encode with this before and it worked well, it never gave large bitrates even on the first pass.

Which is a problem. I'll try a small file to test and then get back.

Well, did you actually get that "100 MB file" in the second pass, or are you talking about what Avidemux displayed during the first pass?

If you talk about the first pass, then forget about it! There is no file written in the first pass, so you can simply ignore the bitrate that is displayed ;)
Please wait until the second pass begins, because in the second pass the output file will be written and then you'll see some useful bitrate values...
