View Full Version : Problem authoring DVD to +RW disc

Hi guys,
I'm trying to author a DVD+RW disc that will play back on my Panasonic DMR-ES15 Domestic DVD Recorder.

I've used WinAvi to convert avi files to DVD format files (vob, ifo, bup, etc...), then Nero to burn them to disc.
However the Panasonic machine will not recognise the formatting, and sees the disc as unformatted.

This happens even when I match the file structure to that normally generated by the Panasonic on this type of disc.

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Hi!

1) Did you, as you should have done, use NERO's "DVD-Video" mode to burn the R/W disc?

2) Do you know whether your Panasonic DMR-ES15 Domestic DVD Recorder recognizes DVD+R/W media and/or the specific brand of media for playback?

3) Does the burned R/W disc playback on your computer system?

The answer is yes to all three questions.

I haven't tried burning to DVD-R or DVD+R, as I only have +RW discs to hand at the moment.

The Panasonic is a multi-format machine that can take +R, -R, +RW, -RW and DVD-RAM.

In addition to burning +R or -R, try playing this burned +R/W on another standalone player.

If it plays on a different standalone player, you will have reduced the possible problems to lie with the Panasonic, for any of the following reasons:

1) Hardware flawed regarding playback capability

2) "Doesn't like" the brand/MID of burned media

3) Can't deal with the speed at which you burned the +R/W

I think 3) sounds plausible.
Can I alter the burn speed within Nero?

The Panasonic will certainly record onto that brand of disc (which is Sony by the way).
I'm not sure what MID means?

I think 3) sounds plausible. You've thusfar done nothing to eliminate 1) or 2) as being contributing factors...

Does it (=your version of DMR-ES15) support your format? Is it an NTSC or a PAL video?

It supports NTSC and PAL.
At the moment it's set to PAL mode, and the DVD I've burnt contains 625-line component, so there shouldn't be a compatibility problem there.

Have tried burning the disc at a different speed; but it didn't make any difference (there are only 2 speed settings with my version of Nero).

Can't try the disc in another domestic player at the moment, as I only have the one.

These Sony discs will record and playback on the domestic machine, so I don't think it's a problem with the brand.

What should the file structure actually look like on a +RW?
The domestic machine makes Video_TS and Video_RM folders on the disc; whereas Nero produces Video_TS and Audio_TS folders (the latter being empty).

Also which quality setting should I use in WinAvi to create the vob files, and would this make any difference? Plus which audio format and bit-rate should be used?

Another thing is that the DVD+RW folders on this unit (VIDEO_RM, VIDEO_TS) produce files that I must first process with DVD Shrink via Re-Author in order to be able to load them up in Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5. If I stick with DVD-RW, there is no such issue.
I would buy a DVD-RW or DVD-R or DVD+R media based on the information above.

Let's not get the formats that DVR's make confused with what they can play. DVD recorders use different recording methods (VIDEO-RM and VIDEO-VR) due to the constraints of real time recording, but they can play DVD-Video format.

Possibly the recorder expects video-rm if a +rw disk is used. Other possibilities are Nero did not respect or adjust the ifo pointers during file allocation or wrong file system. Neither of these being wrong would bother a PC.

That's what I meant.
