View Full Version : DVDShrink and splitting a movie to avoid compression issues

Hi,
I am backing up something and in DVDshrink I find the movie size about 2.5G and Extras to be another 2.5G. If I keep both, the compression may end up in pixilation. Not good.

Does DVDShrink allow to split the movie+extras into 2 DVD5 ?

In doing a search on this forum I see that I could put the Extras as still image and burn the movie and then re-do the other way (meaning put the movie on still and keep the extras). This may not be that great of a solution. Looking for other suggestions.

If you suggest a new tool to do this, pls provide a link as well.

Tks

You can but it will be movie only.
This is just an example:

Say your movie has 30 chapters.
In Shrink's re-author mode you can drag the movie to the window on the left. Then right click on the title and select Set start/End frames.
Then select from chapters 1 to chapter 15.
Backup to folder.
Then you can select 15 to 30 and backup to a different folder.
You may be able to get more chapters on the first disc which will leave you room on the second disc for the extras.
If you want to keep the menu then something like VobBlanker will be the way to go.

Not good.Naah - You're going to be compressing from 5.0G (2.5G+2.5G) to 4.37G or only slightly more than 10%. That low compression should not result in any noticeable pixelation, not even in a high action, colorful movie...

Hi,
The automatic compression number shows as 59.5% after all the other audio streams are removed. This is the Movie+Extras. So, I was wondering if I should have a higher % number thus thinking of splitting this into two DVD5. I guess you are saying, I should be fine with that..

If, as you said,"I find the movie size about 2.5G and Extras to be another 2.5G, that would mean that the TOTAL COMBINED FILESIZE of the original DVD is only 5.0G, or 0.63G greater than the total 4.37GB available on a blank DVD5. In order for the 5.0G of files to fit on the 4.37G blank DVD5, the files would only have to be compressed to 87.4% of their original size.

You are now saying/implying something very different about the original combined filesize.

If, in fact, even after removing some audiostreams, DVD Shrink requires compression to 59.5% of the original size, I'd suggest you instead not compress or eliminate anything at all and, rather use the very old original, easy-to-use freeware "DVDFab" (NOT to be confused with any of the several DVDFab products available from "Fengtao" at dvdidle.com) to split the ENTIRE DVD (including menus).

You can obtain the original freeware DVDFab at:

I think my problem keeps taking me to new directions. Sorry for the poor explanations before but how about this.

I want movie+menu and not movie+menu+extras (to avoid compressing too much into DVD5)

So, I tried DVDFab (as u pointed) and it split the original ripped DVD into Disc1 and Disc2 (I can't tell how it decided to split what into what). I noticed that Disc2 had the larger file size, so I tried to open it in DVDShrink to get my .iso file out. DVDShrink gives me an error when I pointed to Disc2 (VIDEO_TS) folder. The error is:

failed to open file: <path>\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_0.VOB not found
(same error if I try to open the Disc1 files also)

Any thoughts ?
(Tks in advance)

I am still studying this reference to vobBlanker. Looks very complicated (from my perspective). But I will look into that again in the future. Newbie needs easy solution :)

so I tried to open it in DVDShrink to get my .iso file out.Unfortunately, at this point I can honestly say I have no idea what you're trying to say or accomplish.

Once you've used DVDFab and burned the two discs, you'll have a complete and viable backup of the entirety of your original DVD - with no need to use DVD Shrink...

Perhaps another member can offer some new advice...

BTW - You never posted back regarding the success (or failure) regarding the suggestions I gave you for both "Rendition" and "Jumper".

Hi,
With DVDFab, I could not get the .iso file to burn. I wanted one .iso file for Disc2. So in order to do so, I was using DVDShrink. The output from DVDFab was a lot of files (original movie files split into two folder, Disc1 and Disc2 and neither of these folder have one .iso file to burn).

I went back to vobBlanker and was able to get the menu+movie out and then used DVDShrink to get the .iso file and them burn with Imgburn.

Both Rendition and Jumper worked (thanks to all your help). My apologies for not closing on that. I will go back to the original thread for both and comment there.

Tks so much !
