Rip DVD to x264 mkv. Codecs?

Hello

I want to use GK to to create a MKV with x264 codec and 5.1 or 6.1 sound and with "external subtitles" (i.e. not hardcoded) from a DVD.

I'm going to try to follow the guide:

But I don't want to clutter my system with a lot of codecs that I won't need for my mentioned purpose above.
I'm guessing that I really don't need all the codecs from GordianKnot Codec pack (like XviD) to create a x264 mkv.

What codecs do I need?
I'm guessing that i need x264 encoder (latest revision) from http://x264.nl/
The download link from the guide seems a bit old.


I have Haali's Media splitter installed (don't know if it's needed).
I have DVDdecrypter installed.

And everything that came with Gordian Knot Rip Pack:

So I'm wondering if anyone could help me trim down the list of what I need installed in my system in order to succeed?

Depends on what frontend you want to use, a list of available frontends for x264 can be found here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X264).

From the list it seems like StaxRip and HandBrake are the 2 most promising once.
Judging from your signature I'ed say a StaxRip guide/tutorial would probably do the job?

If you really want to use GordianKnot, all you need is the last VfW version of x264, which I believe is 5.5.1 (Google for x264-551-install.exe). The latest x264 will not work with GK.

I suggest to look for a tool using non vfw x264, AviSynth and mkvmerge.

Actually I don't care on what tools GK or not I just want to rip a DVD to a x264. I only thought about using GK cause I ran into that guide. All this is new to me.

I've decided to use StaxRip, it seems nice.
The only confusing parts is the encoder profiles and settings. But I guess I'll try my way forward
