I have a DVD that has inserted subtitles (not done by myself) yet they do not play on a DVD player (tested with two) although they work on a PC.
Is there an easy to use application that could resolve the problem without re-authoring the DVD? Since the DVD has a menu with several chapters I can not simply remove the menu.

Hi!
1) What exactly do you mean by "inserted subtitles"?
2)I have a DVD that has inserted subtitles (not done by myself)(Cough, cough) Rule #6 and/or Newbies "Announcement"?

Someone made a DVD with custom menu that includes several presentations recorded live. Now since some presentations are in English a friend tried to insert subtitles (you know, translations) but they do not work as they should. Now I've been asked if I can fix that and personally I would like it done as easy as possible.
Never thought the following information would be relevant to naming the application that might work. But ok.

Consider 2 tools - PgcEdit and DVDSubEdit. Probably, the stream isn't defined properly and/or the colour lookup table may be badly defined.

@Vampir
(Since a moderator has posted a response to your question, that clearly indicates that it's okay for me and other members to respond further to this thread)
1) Does the menu include the option to select the Subtitle?
2) When you play the DVD on a standalone DVD player, have you tried pressing the "Subtitle" button on the remote control?
3) If you load the DVD into DVD SubEdit, do the subtitles appear?
4) Do you know what software and procedures your friend used to create and then add the Subtitles to the DVD?

Yes, there is a menu with subtitles. The first subtitles work, the 2nd don't. Actually it displays the 1st subtitles.
If you press the Subtitle button it lists between three subtitle streams, interesting though no matter which are chosen only the first are displayed.
I have tested the DVD on my PC with PowerDVD and it works as it should, also works on Xbox 360 but doesn't on a DVD player. I have no idea what software was used.
I tried with pgcedit and dvdsubedit but can't seem to find an option to rebuild or look for errors. I guess those aren't push and wait kind of applications.
Will try to "rip" the DVD with a few commercial applications, maybe they'll play with DVD structure and fix the error.
