View Full Version : Convert demuxed Blu-Ray 264 stream to Quicktime/Final Cut Pro?

Using tools on either a Mac or PC, does anyone have a suggestion for how to convert (with minimal/no quality loss) a demuxed H264 video file from a Blu-Ray disc into a Quicktime-compatible HD File?
Ultimately I need to edit this material in Final Cut Pro, finishing in Apple Pro Res 422HQ. That said, I can easily transcode TO Apple ProRes 422HQ from another QT codec in FCP or Compressor 3 if need be, so my main goal to to get this 264 stream file into anything that Quicktime Pro, FCP, or Compressor 3 will recognize.
---
FYI, in FFMPEG, I tried:
ffmpeg -f h264 -i source.264 -r 23.976 -vcodec copy destination.mov
...which created a .mov file that opens in Quicktime player but crashes it. Dumb loaded 264 question: why would this 264 .mov not be acceptable to Quicktime?
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer.

TMPGEnc Xpress should do this, but it is not freeware.

You may need to reencode the h264 file to h264 again, as long as you use a huge bitrate there shouldn't be any probs.

Hi!to convert (with minimal/no quality loss) a demuxed H264 video file from a Blu-Ray disc into a Quicktime-compatible HD File?Isn't this something that can be accomplished with Quicktime Pro (On either your Mac or PC)?

I doubt that QuickTime can decode BluRay spec H.264 files :)
It's not a very good decoder, and even if it did work, performance would suffer hugely.
So you're probably going to have to re-encode using ffmpeg or some other application that uses libavcodec / x264.

burro08,
Can Avid software import H264 streams from Blu-Ray? My experience with Avids is that they are conservative tools that don't embrace too many formats.
QuadcoreHD,
Doesn't TMPGEnd Express only encode MPEG2? If so, how would that help me get to a Quicktime move that hasn't experienced any quality loss?
setarip_old,
Unfortunately Quicktime Player (which is a subset of Pro) CRASHES when opening a ffmpeg-created quicktime wrapped 264 file (QT player/pro won't even OPEN the original .264 stream).
dat720,
What tool would you use to do this that would create a Quicktime-compatible flavor of (high-bitrate) H264?
Thanks for the advice everyone. Any other ideas about Quicktime and 264?

QT player/pro won't even OPEN the original .264 streamWould you be good enough to post a link to a small piece of this original stream?

Hi,
can you try to put it into a different container, like .mp4. That way it should be recognized by Quicktime Pro. Sometime player apps refuse to play if the container is not at spec and most of the commercial apps suffere from propper elementary streams support (some freeware as well ;-). Try MP4Box....

I would try ffmpeg as Blue_MiSfit has already suggested, as for the command line to output a compatible file, i do not use Quicktime Pro so i cannot help there.

@quicktimeslave
No, TMPGEnc does not only encode to mpeg 2. It will encode h264/avc, divx, xvid, Quicktime, WMV, among many others.

I agree with quadcore i just tested Xpress on a m2ts file i converted from a HD-DVD Works like a a charm in QT. So in theory u can edit in wat ever from there
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the settings to make the express output similar to MEgui
Thanks
