I'm new to ripping dvd's. I was using Gknot with my cheap Epo dvd rom with no problems. I decided to buy a better/faster dvd rom and bought an Aopen 1648 16x dvd rom. Now smartripper hangs when it tries to unlock the drive. I've tried all the tricks noted here in the forum. Such as running the dvd with my player then using smartripper. I also tried opening smartripper with no disc in the DVD rom but no matter what I do smartripper hangs trying to unlock the drive. Smartripper will freeze up and I have to reset my computer, I can't even control, alt, delete my way out of it.

So my question is this. I plan on replacing my new Aopen dvd rom with a different brand. What is a good dvd rom that will work with smartripper? I want something fast. My current cheep Epo dvd rom will only rip at about 2x speed.

Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Do the other rippers behave in the same way?

I haven't tried other rippers. I'm new to this and want to keep the process as simple as possible. Any ideas on what my problem is or what brand of dvd rom to buy?

Thanks,
Bill

Phew!!

Don't I feel lucky!

I just bought a new DVD player too. My intention was to buy a Aopen 16x48x just like you, but the store called me saying they couldn't get it anymore, so I bought a ASUS 16x48x instead.
Everything has been great with this one, it rips at an average of 7.5x and no errors whatsoever.

The only problem is that it's region-locked, but as usual there's ways around that.

I don't know, the simplest way is just to buy a new drive, whatever you want, and try it. Because Smartripper or any good ripper will work on pretty much any drive, so it's a waste of time to ask, "what's a drive it will work on?". I've used it successfully on a number of older and newer drives.

Still, I doubt that there's no way to make it work with this drive. And before you go out and buy a new one, you might consider trying DVD Decrypter (IMHO easier than SR) and then VStrip (less user-friendly but more versatile).

I little update. In an attempt to get my Aopen dvd rom to work with Gknot I downloaded and installed the dvd rom drivers from Aopen's web site. Now my D drive doesn't work and my system crashes all the time. I tried to call Aopen at the tech support number provided in their manual and it appears it is the wrong number. Of course Aopen doesn't provide any contact numbers at their web site. What a great product! I think somehow the Aopen drivers are interfering with the software that supports my 80 gig D drive. If all else fails I'm going to have to reinstall the software which includes formating and partitioning. So of course I'll loose all my data on the drive. Oh well.

It sounds like they are sharinga mem address and your os is kicking one out. Check to see if anything weird named TPkd on irq6. If so, uninstall it. Also make sure you have enough power ;) A faulty or weak power supply can mess withy hard drives bad.

You can hunt down the mfg contact info through their fcc id at fcc.gov.

I would just return the drive.

Hi, (excuse my english...)

I'm just asking me the same question. So I'm new in divx's world and i want to buy a DVD player and i burner too (for the burner i was thinking to the memorex 24xmax) but for the DVD player i need your opinions. (I probably will use SmartRipper (I would like to))

Here is my configuration:

Athlon TB (1.333Ghz)
MSI KT7A 133Mhz (something like that)
TNT2 16 Mo
HD Segate 7200 tpm 20Go(just for ripping)
RAM: 256 Mo

(I wanted to buy the 106s slot in pionner DVD but i 've seen on this forum lot's of people seems to have a lot of difficulties with Pioneer Players)

So, what do you think about it ??

Thx in advance.
