Im looking to compress my HD DVDs down for my media centre,

Mediainfo says the properties of the files are:
Video
Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : High@L4.1
Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 2
Width : 1920 pixels
Height : 1080 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 16/9
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Standard : Component
Colorimetry : 4:2:0
Scan type : Progressive

I always thought Progressive was 23.976 and Film 29.97, and ive read that its better to convert to 23.976fps rather than leave it 29.97fps, how would i go about doing this?

Wait, these are on HD DVD? I thought they were on Blu-ray? If they are on HD DVD, can you point me in the direction of where to buy them?

HD-DVD standard requires that video must be 29.97 fps and 23.976 fps progressive video is not compliant for HD-DVD. Therefore 24fps progressive video is marked interlaced with so-called "pulldown flag".
But, as far as I remember, "Band of Brothers" was interlaced on DVDs. 'Cause this is TV series filmed on camcoder not on celluloid.

It looks like a Blu Ray release (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Band_of_Brothers#DVD_Release) of Band of Brothers is scheduled for later this year.
The HD-DVD version is currently out of production.

It's all good.

Then how does he have it? Oh, it looks like they were released in Japan. And if you are lucky, you can find them on Ebay.

What are the specs for Blue-Ray ? Will it be possible to reduce the framerate to 23.976 (like PAL DVD) ?

I'm hoping to do a 1024x576 reduction and palm it off to friends and associates as a DVD conversion ? lol
Most people's visual appreciation is so limited.

It's all good.

@delacroixp
1024x576 reduction has nothing in common with blu-ray standard. By the way BoB has 1.85:1 aspect ratio, not 2.35:1.

I stand under correction but in PAL-land Band of Brothers is available on DVD at 720 x 576 (16:9) (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1097959#post1097959) which then extrapolates to 1024 x 574 (B=2 crop) hence 1.78:1 .
Of course a 1920 x 1080 Blu-ray release could be reduced (encoded) to 720 x 400 or 864 x 480 (mod 16) or ...
countless variations on the theme without having anything in common with the Blu-ray standard.

However, I am curious whether it could be encoded at the same framerate as the PAL-DVD equivalent.
Obviously, if it were shot on film, it could be IVTC downto 24 fps (or does Blu-ray support 24 fps too).
Since you mention it was shot on camcorder... being able to reduce a Blu-ray version downto 25 fps is less than clear.

24 fps is the most usefull or user-friendly framerate for home transcoders who really do care about filesize !

It's all good !

They are still available as a set at http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/hd-dvds-c-35.html?page=1 but are expensive.

Seems that I was wrong. Maybe DVDs were just hard telecined for TV...
