View Full Version : VFAPI READER crashes (please read anyway!)

I am able to use vfapi reader as well as the produced vfapi-avi without a problem on my duron with win98se. Now I got a second PC, Athlon 1,3 GHz and DDR ram also with win98se, but there I don't manage to get even only the reader to open a file. Its not like I didn't install the codec correctly - to use the reader you don't even need to. But whenver I open a file into the reader, which doesn't even have to be a d2v file (an empty txt file does the same), the Reader crashes.

I already used my other PC to generate a vfapi-avi file of an .d2v file which worked great on my duron, I then copied the source vob, the d2v and the generated avi file to the athlon pc, and there it again didn't work. The Reader crashed when trying to load the .d2v, and every program I used to play the avi crashed too. No message, they all simply stopped running and had to be quit by ctrl-alt-del.

What the heck could make it run on the athlon too? The whole athlon is freshly installed with win98se, directx8.1, directmedia 6.4, just the same as my other pc.

I hope anyone of you knows a fix for this, or knows anything that could have been configured wrong.

If the vfapi codec was correctly installed, I don't see what causes your problem. But I have a few remarks :
- The .d2v is a text format, and with opening it with notepad, there is the path of the vobs which has to be the right one on your second computer.
- I think the codec is also needed to load a .d2v, not only to convert it.
- Opening a .txt file make vfapi raised an error on my computer.

So, perhaps the codec is not properly installed on your computer.

thanx for your answer, but the codec is installed right - but even if it wouldn't be installed right or not even installed at all you are still able to at least open a file in the Reader.exe. I push the "add job" button, select any file and press ok. And that's it - the program crashed. Happens with 1.03 as well as 1.04.
Could it be possible its a problem due to the japanese language? but what would cause this problem on the athlon and not on my good old duron?
I don't have any other problems yet on that athlon machine, but its only 2 days "old" yet, so maybe there's some hardware problem with it (I sure hope not!!) - but as I already said, everything else worked fine =(. I just don't get it.

I don't see what could be the cause of your problem. But you can encode the movie without using vfapi. Use GKnot, or if you prefer just nandub, make a .avs with LoadPlugin("path\mpeg2dec.dll" and mpeg2source("path\name.d2v") and load it with nandub.
Another point, try upgrading your system to Win XP, especially if you have 256+ Mo of RAM. It's worth the cost.

Thanx for the avisynth advise. I hadn't used it 'til now but it seems to do the exact same job as vfapi.

And the avisynth method at least works. I still would like to know what causes vfapi (cause its only vfapi, nothing else) to crash - but as long as the other method works just fine, I'll stick with that. If anyone else has had the same problem, feel free to write your opinion about the matter.
