Anyone know how to correct the "infinite desktop image" issue that is produced when you feed a video out source back into the same computer for capture?

Years ago, if I remember correctly, I looped the image to a VCR using composite-in, then back to my system using the VCR's composite out, then last back to the PC's composite-in. And it worked.

However, I'm trying to do the same again, but now using Component/HDMI for 720p. No luck so far, I'm getting what looks like the below:

As long as the application that is capturing the image has a preview enabled and it is active on the desktop itself as well, I don't think there is anyway to prevent this as the application is simply capturing itself. The only way of preventing it is not having the application active at the desktop (minimize it). No amount of sending the signal through other devices is going to prevent this normally.

It's perhaps a little bit easier to assist if you explain what exactly you want to do and why you don't want this effect and what you do want to be displayed instead. If I understand correctly you don't want the capture application to capture itself, or at least not its preview.

If you have dual displays, you could point the camera at one of them and display the output on the other.

I'll have to try the capture again when the application is minimized and see what that does.

As for what I'm trying to do, it is to be able to be able to capture what is being displayed on my main monitor and clone the same image for capture at 720p. So I want to be able to capture whatever my PC is displaying, but without the "infinite desktop image" issue.

Thanks for help, got it working for desktop capture. But screen goes black when you switch to a game. I'll have to mess around more.

You might want to consider fraps. I did something similar with the PV3 and the results weren't very desirable. Though I guess you might be doing this for 1:1 comparisons, in which case fraps would favor PC capturing heavily.

I capture streaming video from my laptop to the same laptop from time to time. All I do to prevent the 'infinite regression' is mute the recording app (WinTV 2000) and minimize it.

Yeah, minimizing the capture application was all that was needed to fix 'infinite regression' issue.
I can capture the desktop/web surfing etc..., but as soon as I switch to a game, there are problems.
The PV4 will error (something about CPU) and the MonsterX will stop capture.
As for HDMI, can't get that to work at all, not sure why.

My have to try Fraps like Dot50Cal was talking about.
