View Full Version : Simple parameters to identify HD Videos

We're trying to identify HD videos in our app...

Just wondering if using any videos of aspect ratio larger than or equal to 1.78 (=16/9) as a parameter is appropriate or good enough for such purpose.

Also, if the AR = 16/9, then how to differentiate them from those widescreen SD videos which also have AR = 16/9 (non-square pixels)?

Also, could a video of height 480 pixels be also a HD video, or it has to be 720 minimum?

Thanks!

Hi!Also, could a video of height 480 pixels be also a HD video, or it has to be 720 minimum?I believe that 480i/p is defined as "Standard", while 720i/p and 1080i/p are defined as "High Definition" ...

480i/p and 576i/p is SD. Anything >= 720p is HD. But, what if someone has reencoded an SD video to HD resolutions? Although it doesn't make the video Hi-Def per se, your app could be fooled, if you are just looking at the resolutions. If you don't think you'd have such a scenario, then you should be OK.

Wrong forum to post this, BTW.

Hi!I believe that 480i/p is defined as "Standard", while 720i/p and 1080i/p are defined as "High Definition" ... There is no 720i.
