View Full Version : Help needed with opening h.264 files without FFDShow

For some odd reason I can't encode videos with FFDShow on my system, the video flickers and glitches during any movement, it is beyond just ignoring. This only happens though when I am trying to encode h.264 files from VBR satellite HDTV channels in the UK (doesn't happen on the CBR ones). See attached picture for rough idea of problem. I have tried various different "field" orders and such like.

I have tried lots of settings in the FFDShow control panel but nothing seems to change it. The problem seems to happen whatever the format I encode to (ie h.264 to h.264, or h.264 to MPG2, etc etc). It is also irrelevant of the software used to encode.

So, basically speaking, unless anyone knows how I can fix the FFDShow issue then is there any other way I could open h.264 files in an encoding program ? I have tried Haali Media Splitter but I just get a green screen. I have CoreAVC installed but am not sure how I would go about getting it to open files in Main Concept Reference.

Many thanks in advance.

P.S : When I try and encode in AutoMKV I always get a MediaInfo error (it crashes), any idea why ? I have tried 8 versions of it but either get the error or it just hangs, depending on version.

Post images / samples etc to a file sharing service, like megaupload or sendspace. The attachments system isn't frequently allowed.

Regarding your problem - try running your captures through avinaptic. It's very good at telling you _exactly_ what the files in question are. Then we can try getting your files into AviSynth - maybe with a special DirectShow filter graph or ffmpegsource.

Thanks for the advice, I will do as mentioned, I will download that software straight away. I will report back when I find out.

Also, I now (thanks to BetaBoy) seem to be able to open h.264 files in my encoder using CoreAVC, but it crashes when I try to encode (due to a Microsoft DLL error).

P.S : I have seen various 4 hour shows in 720p at 4.4gb created by other people that look fantastic in quality, yet when I try and encode 4 hours in h.264 the quality is poor. What sort of software do people use to get such great results at such a small file size ? I presume it i x264 and AVISynth, is this the "scene" way of encoding HDTV ?

I don't follow the "scene" - but it's likely they're using AviSynth and x264, as these are extremely powerful tools with a vibrant community behind them!
