View Full Version : The relationship between average bitrate and aspect ratio?

I belive I am correct in saying that a 16:9 film with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio requires a lower bitrate than a 16:9 film with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio - the black bars don't require much bitrate.

So what's the ratio? e.g. I encoded traffic (a 1.85:1 film) with an average bitrate of 2071, if this film instead had an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, what bitrate would achieve comparable quality?

I'm not particularly interested in the figures for fullscreen.

Thats a good question. I have noticed that 19:9 film with 2.35:1 do require less bitrate then the 1.85:1. My "Goal" with the 1.85:1 has been the same quality as the 2.35:1 but without going overboard and making a sh*t load of cd's:). So what i'd been doing lets say the bitrate was 2071 I would go up around 200 to about 2271 give or take 50kb/second should be comparible atleast in my tests it was.
