how do I Enable "DMA" I've looked at this tutarial http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html

when I double click on primary channel, Transfer mode says dma if available
but current transfer mode says not applicable
its the same in both primary and secondary channels
I'm having problems burning a movie in nero or any burning software
should I uninstall primary and secondary channel and reboot or can you please tell me another way I can get DMA enabled

In the Device Manager (via the Control Panel>>System>>Hardware>>Device Manager), you simply have to remove the applicable IDE channel (Click on "IDE...Controllers") and let your computer reset it to DMA as follows:
Right click on the pertinent channel in Device Manager
Click on uninstall
Reboot
After rebooting go back to Device Manager and change the setting to "DMA if available"...

In the image (4th window from the top) there is Ultra DMA Mode 4, so it is not the same. Remove them both and let them autodetect and restart or give this script a try (my favourite):

I've tried all you suggested but its still the same as in the snapshot, I've uninstalled the primary IDE channel and secondary IDE channel but still no joy,

Make sure you've got the latest drivers installed for your VIA chipset as well..

If it still looks the same way as in the picture posted, you have at least one device with the Ultra DMA Mode 4. If you tried the script above, what did it say?
Do you even have some devices on the primary channel? It seems not (Current transfer mode: Not applicable).
Ref.: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/228985/en-us
Method 11, Secondary IDE Channel:
Note If Current Transfer Mode under Device 0 or under Device 1 states Not Applicable, that device is not being used. Change only the Devices that no do not state Not Applicable. If both devices state Not Applicable, your CD or DVD drive is on the Primary IDE Channel.

Regarding the VIA chipset driver, if you want some help, please post your motherboard exact type. Thank you.

Thanks for your help, my motherboard is a Asus M2V-MX, cpu Athlon 64 x2 dual-core, 2GB ram, winxp home, I can't see a device with Ultra DMA Mode 4, I know you can see it on my last snapshot but I can't see it now, when I ran this program http://winhlp.com/node/10 this is what it said (no resettable ATA channels with windows drivers found nothing changed) I just taken this snapshot of the primerary and secondary channels

I had a look on the microsoft site and tried what they suggest but still no joy, could it be chipset drivers? I have the latest firmware for dvd-rw and dvd-rom,

@Dansan:
Thank you for your informative reply. Interesting...
Not applicable - both channels, both devices...

There is a manual:
http://dlsvr01.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/socketAM2/M2V-MX/e2826_m2v-mx.pdf

Can you please write the exact type of the HDD and DVD drives and what connectors (page 1-6) do you have them connected to?

This should be the latest driver version available from ASUS:
http://dlsvr05.asus.com/pub/ASUS/misc/utils/VIA_Chipset_V510A.zip

ASUS servers seem rather slow to me, you'd better get the file with a download manager.
8,022,863 Bytes, no errors while unpacking, md5 checksum: 789A67E2E037F5445140F4EF47FC7143 (if you don't know what md5 checksum is, please ignore.)

I linked the product pages above. Please try the VIA drivers again and let me know.
In case the download fails again, here are some other links, all seem slow :(. The one linked above is Japan, but seemed to be the fastest.

I got this from another forum see what you think,
Is your DVD-RW a SATA drive? I don't believe SATA has secondary or primary channels. On ATAPI devices, you set the DMA setting in the device manager under the device. I am not sure if SATA has DMA settings or not. I use USB and SCSI CD and DVD devices.
here is snapshot from device, note DMA controller at the top will try again to install drivers and post back

I downloaded the file ok and extracted it to my desktop
but when I tried to install the the drivers it got to 82% then I got, the wizard was interupted before VIA drive setup program could not be completly installed, I rebooted and got a dark screen with lots of text with a few options using the arrow keys I didn't have time to read it, it was so fast so I chose best know configeration or something like that, it booted as normal again, I have since burned a movie with Imgburn I haven't tried nero yet, everything is still the same in device manager

This is really weird. I don't remember how is a SATA DVD-RW shown in the channels, but I do know for sure that on two boards, one with a P35 chipset, the other with a i975X chipset, the SATA hard drives DMA option can be set in the Primary/Secondary Channel properties. How fast is your drive?

Download HDtune and run the Benchmark.
http://www.hdtune.com/download.html

Just noticed this:
I use USB and SCSI CD and DVD devices.

Is the hard drive shown as as SCSI device as well?

Unfortunately I don't know why the VIA drivers install failed. You might retry at a later time.

Dansan, the HDtune result seems normal to me and the CPU usage as well. When you click VIA ATA Channel, do you have some options for DMA?

Could you please expand in the device manager the DVD/CD-ROM drives branch?

I have found another driver (?) as a supplement:

Thank you for the screenshots. One DVD drive as a SCSI, the other one not. Could you plese try the Hyperion drivers (replacement for 4in1?) above? Or even a newer version here:

Thank you for the ImgBurn log. I don't see any errors, everything was successful. Does it mean ImgBurn works for you?

When there is a Nero error written, I will get back to you again.
