I have a couple of mp4s that i made - they are over 4gb so won't play on a ps3. Is there a simple tool to split the files, maintaining HD quality without doing a 20hr re-encode again. I have used mkv2vob which works well for mkv's - is there something similar for mp4 source files? Thx for any help.

Thx for that. I thought that might work too - tried hjsplit and "binary file splitter" but these are no good . Text from product:
This software should not be confused with an editor. In most cases you cannot use this utility to break files into smaller useful pieces because only the first piece will have the file header information required to open it. For example if you spilt a sound or video file using this tool, the first piece may actually play back but the remaining pieces will be useless on their own. To split files into useful pieces you will need special software that can re-encode each piece and create new header information for each piece.

But even the first file won't play in a pS3 ? arghhhhhhhhh

could you not use MKVToolnix (http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/) and change the container to mkv and then use mkv2vob?

Use YAMB! It can split MP4 container into smaller pieces that you can play by it self or join later.

YAMB main site (http://yamb.unite-video.com/features.html)

It is a GUI for MP4box.exe which can be used by CLI or by this GUI. In GUI pick editing>click to split mp4/.../3gp then you must navigate from input to find your file, let it load (so you see total time) and then you can pick any option for how you want to split your file.

There are documents for how to use both CLI or GUI on main site and you will find that many use YAMB (mp4box.exe) here on doom9.

I think OP want to use MP4 because of some hardware limitation, otherwise he/she would already have solved it by going to MKV instead as this container have been mentioned in the very first post.
