Is the Xvid codec all that is needed to play a DVD movie in Windows Media Player 11 (windows xp)?

No, because DVDs are MPEG-2, not MPEG-4 ASP (which Xvid is an implementation of).

So what is a good free codec to be able to play a DVD movie in WMP 11?

ffdshow tryouts (you must enable mpeg2 support in video decoder properties during or after the installation).

Alternatively, Media Player Classic (http://www.sf.net/projects/mpc-hc) has built-in DVD support (i.e. no need for external mpeg2 decoder).

Another free MPEG-2 decoder with DVD support is DScaler5.

How about the xpcodecpack 2.3.4?Don't install codec packs that you don't need. Its a sure-fire way to mess up your system.

Most mom-n-pop computers stores carry a OEM version of PowerDVD for under $10. This is a good player and includes the codec.
