Anyone have any suggestions which standalone (or other) settings would minimize the hiccups in xvid playback on the 360? Right now if I convert dvd-quality video using the 100% quality setting and everything else at default/auto settings it tends to have small hiccups during playback.

If your small hiccups is video freezing every 5 minutes and you are using Dolby Digital (AC3) soundtrack then there is nothing you can do right now. It is a known problem with the Xbox 360 that any file over 1GB in size that has an AC3 audio track tends to stutter at the same exact points everytime. The only way to fix that right now is to MP3 the sound and you will be fine. Is that the problem you were having?

that sounds about right...
That is rather disappointing...low bitrates look bad on a 40" 1080p lcd...and I have surround sound :-/
