im not asking which is best im just trying to get an overview on the mehtords people are using, i have been told that dvd decrypter and rip it for me are the tools to use, them others are saying dvd fab decrypter.
Which way do you do it and which would you suggest, it has been so long since i had to back up a few dvds of mine, and i see that the tools in order to do this have changed alot in that time.
So any advise is greatly welcomed :)
Thanks

Dude theres hundreds if not thousands of guides on the internet for ripping dvd's start searching either the Doom9 Forums or Google for guides as for tools, it really depends on what you hope to acheive, again do some research, if a straight backup is in order maybe dvd decryptor, if you want only the movies no menus or extras maybe dvd shrink....... you need to do the research to find the tool that will best suit your needs.

i have looked - read my post, as i have said there are many different ways, i am asking which people use, i used to just use dvd decrypter, now with all the other protections other tools are needed, if one site says one thing, one says another, and another says something else, you have conflicting information.
That is why i have asked here, there are a lot of knowledgeable people here, so if a few say to use one way i will try that. I don't want to spend hours and hours test the hundreds of different ways to rip a disc, if a few people here say that x+y= good results, i don't have the time to test out every single way to rip a disc, if i did i wouldn't have posted here, i would have downloaded all the apps and tried them out.

there is not one perfect solution in my experience..... i have a raft of different methods for different dvd's.
just some of the tools i use a dvd shrink, dvd decryptor, anydvd (mostly for HD's), mencoder can encode straight off the disc, imgburn in conjunction with anydvd..... it really does depend, you are asking a wide open question there....
i also have another machine running ubuntu linux with a bunch of scripts for doing it with either mencoder or ffmpeg/dvdauthor...

i have tried dvd decrypter+ripitforme and that seems fine most of the time, other have said to use anydvd+dvd decrypter, other dvd fab decrypter (although i believe that still has issues), others have said to use dvd decrypter default settings, others to tick remove ifo and structure protection, so i guess im looking for a semi definitive solution where by it will do most discs, more a sort of rough idea of what to use and when to use it (which tools for which protections)
As i say i have not had to back up a disc in a while

dvd decryptor shouldnt need anydvd, as the name suggests de decryptor decrypts the disc, which is also what anydvd does, you could just use anydvd, right click on its tray icon and click the rip video to hard disk option... then simply burn the folder it produces using imgburn... or any other burning app
i still like dvdshrink, it works on most discs and lets me rip create a iso with just the movie and any extra tracks i dont want in it...
it comes down to finding a method that best suits what you want to do!

DVDs with newer protections cannot be backed up with DVD Decrypter. The same goes for DVD Shrink.

people, why can't you just answer the question, some of you. I usually go with fab/vobblanker or fixvts, if need be/ dvd2one or shrink, love those two programs/imgburn or decrypter to burn.
at this point all i have install in my PC are: dvd2one V2,shrink,vobblanker, imgburn, decrypter, fab( free)

We are getting close to rule 12 territory here, folks.
Everyone has an opinion as to what's good or not. Equally, everyone has their own methods.
Carpo has asked a legit question - presumably in the quest for a better way (so to speak). The answer is to use what works for you. When what you use doesn't work for you, and you have a specific problem, then more specific advice can be given. Otherwise, I can see this thread turning into a program fanboy festival.
There are many programs, already mentioned here. A search will turn up some others.
And elizerrojas, please remember rule 4.

i never ask which is best - i just asked what other people use so i can test out the replies i get, there are so many ways now thanks to various protections, and as i said i have been out of the loop, so rather than me waste a lot of time ripping and encoding discs which could then turn out to be useless, i thought that there might have been people here who have hit the new protections and could advise me in which tools would help with what protections.

RipIt4Me package works for me most of the time, but then again, it's been a while since I've to deal with the newest DVDs, so not sure if RipIt4Me will work with them too. Even if it's an older DVD, I still tend to use RipIt4Me instead of just standalone DVD Decrypter because of the former's ability to clean up the VOBs and remove unwanted packs and other junk, when I use the Movie only option in RipIt4Me.

I'm using DVD Decrypter in file mode, RipIt4Me, DVDFab HD Decrypter and DVD Shrink.

I used to use DVD Decrypter, but it started failing on more recent
discs, so I switched to CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD, and it has worked
on every disc I have tried it on, even ones I hear complaints
about in various forums. It also lets you delete annoying bits from the DVD that you don't really want to keep.
My one warning is about AnyDVD. It has this "Remove annoying
adverts and previews" mode, that is great when it works, but
really screws things up when it doesn't. Don't leave this mode
on for normal viewing, but test it for each DVD you are tempted
to use it on. One symptom of failure is that the DVD menu
button won't work. If this mode works for a given DVD, use it
during DVD backup, and then turn it off. (The backed-up DVD
will have the effect incorporated into it.)

notec, there is no need for 'Step 4'. VobBlanker will do all the dirty work.

Does DVDFab extract individual scenes?
I'm using DVDDecrypter to pull individual scenes out of movies. But recently, I'm running into discs it can't read.
I'm trying the free version of DVDFab HD Decrypter 5.0.9.0, and it has "customize", which is disabled in the free version. Will that do what I want?

I usually re-edit in PgcEdit after using VB (a) Editing the main title after VB chews on it, b) Checking again for Jumps 2 Nowhere, c) Jumps 2 Void, d) Uncalled PGCs and e) redoing Time maps then, f) saving.) - so running it thru FixVTS does a good job of cleaning (Remapping) all that up before making the ISO - since at this point I'm done with VB.

Gee, are you gunna like the new function in the upcoming version 9 notec. In one function is "removes useless stuff" - all of what you described as well as unused cell commands and useless GPRMs. :)

Why add the extra steps? Just do all of that in the original edit with PgcEdit.

I am drooling at the thought of it!
Trust me it's well worth drooling over. :)
You'll have to wait just a little bit longer until r0lZ releases it to find out the full details but v9 adds some very useful new features and the changelog is massive.
Just thought I'd add to the suspense. :D
