Hi
i want use x264 for encoding HD-ts streams in mkv
My recordings have (11-12)Mbps and i want to know how much i can compress it with x264 without (to much) quality suffering.
I've read in a other forum that ca 4Mbps for 720p and 7Mbps for 1080p (Megui HQ-Slowest profil) is a good size/quality ratio.
Has anybody other opinions?

forget about bitrate and use CRF@22.

Yeah - ditto.

You can't accurately say "x mbps will be enough for x pixels"

It all depends on the content, and what looks "good" to you.

CRF mode is nice in that you only have to run one pass, and it also delivers consistent quality. File sizes are a bit unpredictable though!

well thanks
I will test it, although I've never used the "const. quality" mode

Do, you may really like it.

I was staunch 2pass for a long time, but I just gave up on it. CRF is great if you're not too worried about file sizes...
