View Full Version : Subs Out Of Synch

Hi folks,
I have backed up my PAL version of Star Wars IV A New Hope to mp4 using MeGUI. I used the VobSubber tool in MeGUI to extract the forced subs. When I play the backup the subs are displayed 8 minutes too late (eg they are displayed at approx. 48 minutes on DVD but 56 minutes on backup).
I have backed up LOTR and had no problems with the forced subs on that.
I am aware there are tools out there that can correct the sync problems, but I am really wanting to know what I did wrong in the first place to cause the problem. Does anyone know why this has happened?
Thanks kindly in advance :)

Hi!
Does the beginning of your .MP4 play properly, or does it cycle through the multi-angle (English/French/Spanish) initial scroll?

Hi setarip_old, thanks for your quick response :)
The beginning plays correctly, ie it doesn't cycle through different languages for the initial scroll.
I used DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 in IFO mode and selected Angle 1 of PGC 1 in VTS_01 to rip the main movie to my hard drive (not sure if this info is relevant or not).

I know this isn't going to help you any, but I just quickly checked my hardsubbed .AVI conversion of my R1 version - and the first (I believe - please correct me if I'm wrong) forced sub is the bounty hunter saying, "Going somewhere, Solo?", appearing at 50:00.
Yet, it appears at 53:40 when playing the DVD.
I played both using VLC. Both are properly synched (video, audio, and subs).

Yep, I am pretty sure that is the first forced sub :)
I installed VLC and tried my backup in that but still had the same problem.
Do you know where the extra 00:03:40 comes from on your DVD?
MY DVD is R4 BTW, not sure if that is significant or not.

Do you know where the extra 00:03:40 comes from on your DVD?Not a clue. It's nothing I've paid attention to, since I've never had a "subtitles out of synch" situation.
I installed VLC and tried my backup in that but still had the same problem.Just to make certain I understand you correctly - You're not simply concerned about the differing time display are you?
Your subtitles are actually being displayed later than the part of the video they should be displayed with, correct?
(e.g. Bounty hunter appears onscreen and speaks at 48:00, but subtitle, "Going somewhere, Solo?" appears onscreen at 56:00)

Hi setarip_old,
Sorry for the delay in reply, I couldn't read or post because there was a problem with the forum's db.
You understand me correctly. The bounty hunter appears at 00:48:00, but "Going somewhere, Solo?" doesn't appear until 00:56:00.
A bit of an update: I ran VobSub directly (rundll32.exe vobsub.dll,Configure), extracted the subs, then added them to my mp4 backup via MeGui's mp4 Muxer tool and it worked perfectly.
Perhaps there is a bug in MeGui's VobSubber tool?
