View Full Version : A Suitable Replacement for the Sony DRX-830UL-T?

I’m a Mac user, and I’ve worn my Sony external burner to the ground. Time for a new one. Sadly, as I’m sure most of you know, that’s been discontinued and the new model—the 840—is USB only. That just won’t cut it for me. I used to have a Lacie DVD burner, a few years ago, but it just never seemed compatible with my G5. I really liked the Sony and would love to get another, which brings me to my few questions for this message board:
-Does anyone know where I can still get a Sony DRX-830UL-T, new in a box. B&H in NYC (which is where I am) just sold their last!
-What would work as a substitute? I’m looking for an external DVD burner, with a firewire, preferably not a Lacie (tho if someone has some high praise about newer models, I'd listen).
-Lastly, if I’m asking the right question but at the wrong forum, can anyone recommend a resource to get some answers from consumers? (I trust the folks on message boards more and more nowadays for honest, sensible info!)

Thanks!!

It looks like I can still find this older model, new in a box, tho I read varying reports about its Mac compatibility. Can anyone confirm the quality of this model and if they've ever tried it on a Mac?
