Howdy everyone.
I have used server 2008 as a desktop for a while now - it is simply the best windows based OS you can find... Recently, I have reinstalled the system and struggling to get it working with absolute minimum of bloadware.

This is where WMV issue with Media Player Classic comes in:
I have loaded FFDSHOW 64 bit (BTW, CLSID's ICL10 build doesn't work (App Crash) whereas ffdshow_rev1936_20080413_clsid_x64) runs perfectly after C++ 2005 x64 pack is installed.

The issue that I have is that MPC is refusing to play WMV files "Can not reder the file". ffdshow does have all WMV codecs enabled.Although something tells me it never gets there (container issues?) h.264 + AC3 / DTS MKVs do work for comparison purposes...

What I'm trying to avoid is installation of desktop services that would bring windows media player (and associated codecs) along with a load of other crap.

(I'd prefer not to install codec packs for the exact same reason)

Installation of Windows Media Encoder x64 repsonds back
WmEncEng.dll failed to register. Doing some search on the net:

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2090583&SiteID=17

And

http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Media/microsoft.public.windowsmedia.encoder/2006-07/msg00026.html

Does anyone know which SDK they are talking about?

Does anyone know what might be missing / where to get it?
Nothing in the event log, and there seems to be no way to enable debug logging on MPC...

An attempt to install Audio Codec pack
windowsmedia10-kb917312-x64-intl
results in "Setup could not find update.inf"...
... agrr. what INF.

Do you have this issue with all WMVs?
I tried WS2008 + ffdshow_rev1936_20080413_clsid_x64 + MPCHC + WMV and it works fine for me.
No additional codecs installed.

Windows Server 2008 is just that, a Server oriented operating system. It has the capabilities of Vista SP1, but has some things disabled.

I'm not sure whether its like Server 2003 and has Directx available but disabled by default. I have read somewhere that some files are missing, such as those required by TV Tuners:

Mpeg2Data.ax
mpg2splt.ax
kstvtune.ax
MSDvbNP.ax
MSNP.ax
VBICodec.ax
vbisurf.ax

There's really no reason for Server 2008 to be superior over Vista for home use, as its essentially the same thing just configured differently. Its not liike Server 2003 which is a different codebase to XP. A correctly configured and trimmed Vista would be much more practical in my opinion, after removing and turning off all unnecessary options/services etc. (I don't need virtualisation, 100 connected users etc)! Vlite now supports slipstreaming SP1 :) so you can slipstream it, then remove all the unwanted/unnecessary options/services etc and make for a very nice fast OS!

I have done this, and included all the general release and other Microsoft fixes for SP1, I would have to say it its much superior to even an updated non vlite'd RTM version of Vista. Updates to Vista can be automated for install, to that doesn't require you to sit their and manually install them, alternatively they can be included with vlite as well.

I am just saying this if you have the option to, as I believe Microsoft has removed some of the files you require to play some things effectively. It can still be played, just to get to the same effective level for home use modifying Vista is probably quicker than modifying Server 2008.

You should be able to run the ICL10 version, you may just need to install some additional runtimes on Server 2008
