View Full Version : DVD Decrypter crashing on rip error

Hi,
DVD Decrypter always worked on my Win 2000 PC, I recently got a new PC with XP SP2 fully up to date.
On the new PC when DVD Decrypter encouters a problem with a DVD it often ceases to function properly. This can involve a retry error, a manual cancel/skip file, or similar ripping error, though on disks that it reads with no problems it works perfectly. When an error occurs DVD Decrypter will not close at all, File-Exit, clicking the 'x' button, even ending the process with task manager all fail to have any effect. Worse though its crashed-but-still-alive state prevents other apps from starting or apps already running from loading files, and Windows won't even re-start or shut down. The only remedy is to hit the reboot button on the PC's case!!
Obviously something is up. Any ideas what to do to resolve this situation?
Thanks.

Your new drive is not up to snuff or you have a high percentage of bum source discs. See if they can be read on your old machine. If so, your new drive is at fault.

I'm sure it's not that the DVD drive fails to read where another drive suceeds, the drive on my old PC has the same read errors on the same disks. The problem is how DVD Decrypter reacts when it encounters problems.

I had some odd read problems with my DVD drives and was able to resolve them (I believe) by cleaning-out old residual software junk from previous software installs.
Start with ImgBurn Tools-->Filter Driver Load Order to see what you've got on your PC(s).

Thanks for the pointer.
Unfortunately I don't know what the info. means or what to do with it. Here's a clickable screen cap, any ideas?

I see you have a new PC so there isn't much in there. Dunno what cdsrbsdrv is (B's Recorder GOLD; what's that) but PxHelp20 is from Roxio or Sonic--what software is on your pc for burning?
This was a shot in the dark--you're probably ok with these filter drivers...

If the drive is doing something, control is not with DVD Decrypter. Clicking on X, brings up the "be patient" dialogue. You have to wait for the chnace to abort - ie after 20 more read retries. Set your Software read error retries to a lower figure (e.g. 3) in the settings (I/O) if you like.

Burning Nero and ImgBurn.
Ok thanks.

Perhaps you didn't read my original post. It has crashed, not responding, etc. It is not re-trying it is not responding.

And you need to read mine. Control is not with the prog anymore. The drive has it.
I have experienced what you describe a few times and have also resorted to turning on and off, as you did.
The only other way to get round this when you get into read loops is to use some other program, which, when it encounters such errors, inserts dummy sectors. Plenty abound.

Many thanks blutach. That is exactly what happens, though a different app. It occurred to me before that ImgBurn and DVD Decrypter were written by the same person, similar design, field, and the success/error sounds are identical, maybe it's the same code causing the problem (EG. no timeout built in)!
I'll follow the advise in the post, upgrading drivers and such like and see what happens.
Thanks again.

It's not the "code" that's causing the problem. Again, the control of the system is with the drive and it is not reporting back to the software.
Hopefully, your update will help. Please let us know.
