I re-formated my computer recently, after a long period of choosing to co-exist with literally dozens of viruses plaguing my computer. Upon re-installation I decided to install k lite codec pack for all my video playing needs. Soon after I noticed my system crashes whenever I open my folder of movies. Using a two folder technique I repeatedly removed rows of films to narrow it all down to one file making my comp crash. I isolated that file in a folder on its own, and found I was correct, my system no longer crashes when opening my movie folder minus this one file. And

When I open the folder containing the isolated file, if I'm viewing it as a thumbnail, as soon as the system tries to load the thumbnail picture, it crashes. If I view the folder contents in list form, it wont crash, but the slightest agitation, like right clicking the file will cause the system crash. This system crash happend's in this order: first explorer crashes, I'm asked if I want to send report and after that drwatsons postmortem debugger crashes, and again I'm asked if I want to send a report. Then after that explorer is restarted instantly, and all my programs restarted along with it.

The movie file is 700mb avi file, and the compression is DivX.

Try this - from the desktop, Start -> Run, then type regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll and press OK. You should get a pop-up saying DllUnregisterServer in shmedia.dll succeeded. Now see if you are still crashing on that file.

Even if it's no longer crashing, uninstall that K-lite codec pack and install just the individual codecs you need.

You could also select ffdshow for decoding DivX encoded video.

In my experience the Explorer shell extension that is responsible for the thumbnailing is extremely fragile. It crashes frequently, slows things down, and keeps files 'in use' for a short while when you select them, causing annoyances when you want to rename/move something. So my advice would be to follow unskinnyboy's steps to disable the shell extension.

You could use Insurgent to remove the codec pack. Get it from here:
http://www.cccp-project.net/

Also, their CCCP codec pack is nothing but an installer for ffdshow, vsfilter (for subtitles), matroska splitter and a couple of video players (zoomplayer and MPC). Highly recommended.

so k-lite codec pack is problematic, is this the consensus?

If so then what codec pack should I use for to play my divx, xvid, mkv, mov, mp4, ogm video files? G-not? CCCP?

Or should i keep k-lit, and change the shell options as stated above?

ffdshow - tryouts found here:
http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/

No, it's not the packs fault. The Explorer thumbnail shell extension is the buggy part and that belongs to Windows. It is recommended to disable it.

The pack also contains ffdshow. So if you want to can use ffdshow instead of the standard DivX decoder. But even with ffdshow, explorer can crash.

codec packs are always Problematic and Evil (tm).
get FFDShow-Tryouts, MPC (or MPC-HC), Haali media splitter and if you need qt and rm then you can also install qt alternative and real alternative.

110% correct on all points. Do that.

And all Muslims are terrorists...
Don't generalize.

Both K-Lite and CCCP use MPC, Haali and ffdshow (tryouts) as their main components for playback.

CCCP as Crappy Communist Code Pack?
no thanks. using a software for political propaganda is not acceptable, expecially in this forum where political discussions are forbidden.
So, im sorry for you but ALL codec packs are Evil.

"Propaganda"? I highly doubt anyone involved in the CCCP is remotely communist whatsoever. Its called a "joke" or a "gimmick." It stands for "Combined Community Codec Pack," and is the official Matroska playback solution. Somehow, I suspect their word has a lot more weight than yours.

Codec packs are not "evil"; by that logic, if I make a simple installer that does nothing except install FFDshow-Tryouts and Haali's splitter, it is "evil." No, the proper term is "convenient." The vast majority of users really do not want to have to install and configure multiple programs just to play back a video. Any claim that codec packs are inherently guaranteed to be evil is simply elitist--its sort of like the people who say that nobody needs GUIs and everyone should just be able to do everything from the commandline. Most people really don't care to do such a thing.

Remember, all generalizations are false; codec packs are often "evil," but not always.

Whatever. Installing MPC and FFDShow is as easy as installing a crappy codec pack.
Mplayer or VLC are even better solutions...
So, why bother? Stay away from codec packs and everything will work fine.

At this point can I uninstall the codec pack, maybe using that insurgent program, and still have peace of mind that no problems will linger or remain? Or is a full reformat the only way to achieve this?

If it leaves any problematic filters on your system that cause playback issues, Insurgent can be used to unregister them.

You could use MPC-HC with buildin splitters and decoders.
