Is there a way to make subtitles look nicer when I play a DVD on my computer? Maybe smooth them out, round the edges or something?
Thanks

The subtitles are basically bitmap images overlaid on top of the video on your DVDs, like transparencies/slides. Thus "they are what they are". But you can edit them somewhat for color & outline using DVDSubEdit (look up in Subtitles, it's a sticky thread).
You can also completely de-multiplex your DVD and re-do the subtitle track in any way you want, including using a different font altogether, but this is non-trivial to do.

MPlayer has the -spuaa option that does some kind of blurring/anti-aliasing on the subtitles. I don't like it much, but it might be what you want.
