Posting here as a last resort only after having been given the cold shoulder by AT&T's Customer and Tech supports and LG themselves, not to mention through at least 2 message boards (one being a Gmail mobile board through Google) in the hopes someone might be facing the same issue as I.

I recently purchased the LG Trax (CU575) phone and want to access my Gmail account through it. My understanding is that there are 3 possible ways to do so on this phone: 1.) Access Gmail at its mobile webpage through the phone's browser, which does work perfectly fine, 2.) Use the mobile email feature provided on the phone, only that I understand from tech support that if your provider isn't among the pre-installed and present list then it's not possible, 3.) Download and install the Gmail app from the site.
I would prefer #3, only when I download and install the app it works just fine on that initial download/install, but any time it's run thereafter it hangs at the "Please wait..." screen--no Java screen appears and no windows or error messages are shown.
The phone does support Java 2.0 and must have the required Verisign certificate installed, although I don't know that for fact. I've tried, at the suggestion of tech support through AT&T, to reset the phone to defaults, which did nothing whatsoever to help.

Has anyone encountered this? Any suggestions or advice? Thanks.

I wouldn't have expected LG and AT&T to support third-party apps anyway. I can't offer any direct help since I don't have an LG Trax CU575 myself, but I did a search in the Google Mobile Help Group (perhaps something you have done yourself, too), and it appears from a few threads that Google Maps don't work on CU575. Maybe the same bug prevents the GMail app from working too.

The phone should support third-party apps if it supports Java 2.0, and indeed many such apps are included on the phone. I haven't checked out google maps on this phone yet myself, but I'd still like to be able to access Gmail through the app if nothing else.

The phone should support third-party apps if it supports Java 2.0, and indeed many such apps are included on the phone. When I said I didn't expect them to support it, I meant that their Tech Support isn't obliged to get it working, because it's not their software or firmware you are trying to install. I have a BlackBerry, but just because I use their SDK to write an app for it, doesn't mean that RIM is obliged to support my app.

I would expect that if enough people notify LG of this bug with the GMail app (assuming there is a bug), they might fix it with a firmware update.
