View Full Version : DVD Navigation Kills The Sound

Hi

I've been searching for information on this topic for months now but can never find anything relating to it! :(

A number of full DVDs that I've burned seem to suffer from this: If you use any navigation buttons (jump forwards/backwards a chapter or even just rewind/fast forward a little) the sound disappears! Ejecting then reloading will bring the movie back on at the point you were at with the sound restored and otherwise the DVDs 'work' fine.

These discs were mainly just DVD files burned to disc using Nero Express (DVD-Video Files option) but I never kept track of any specific details at the time they were burned; I just know that it's a problem that has reared its ugly head on a number of occasions.

As I say, I can find no other references to similar problems anywhere on the web (after extensive searches) so I'm starting to wonder if it may just be peculiar to my particular brand of DVR (ONN Digital DS8643).

Anyone know what causes this problem or, better still, how to remedy it?

:thanks:

Might be a player issue. Have you checked that with several different hardware and software players?

Also, have you modified the DVD files before burning them? If yes, how?

Hi there

Thank you for your reply:thanks:

I made no modifications whatsoever to the DVD files before burning (wish I knew how to, I have several bits of a movie DVD collected from different sources that I'd like to be able to stitch together into a working DVD but I just can't figure out how to do it  I'm sure PGCEdit or InfoEdit would be the way but I have no expertise with these programs :o)

It is now beginning to look as though it may well be a player-specific problem (as you suggest). I gave one of these DVDs to my son yesterday. We tried it first on the PC and there were no problems (both WMP and VLC handled the disc fine) then he took it away to try on his own DVD player. I've just heard from him that it played fine on two separate DVD players that he tried it on today so I guess it is my Onn Digital DVR that's at fault here. For info it's a DS-8643 DVD Recorder in case anyone else is looking to buy one. It's relatively cheap and cheerful from Asda and I'm quite happy with it beyond this problem (and persistent problems displaying subs correctly, niggling little things like bottom lines not clearing, especially when there's a black border there ).

I guess that clears up the issue: it doesn't look like there's any practical solution to it (other than buying a better DVR :)) but thanks again for taking the time to respond.

@Highlander009

Hi!

From what you've now described and analyzed, it appears that:

1) Your DVR does a good job of recording - and creates DVDs that play properly on other players, both PC and standalone

2) Your DVR does a lousy job of playing back what it's recorded

I'd suggest you keep your DVR - Why risk potential recording problems with a new/different DVR? - and get an inexpensive standalone player for playback...

Hi

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to reply and for your suggestion which I'm sure you offer in pefectly good faith but it would appear that you have misunderstood the problem here. Perhaps I didn't explain it properly ('tho r0IZ seemed to grasp it OK :)) but my DVR has no problem whatsoever playing back anything that's been recorded on it.

The problem of sound loss has only arisen on a small number of DVDs comprising DVD files (usually sourced from the Internet) that I have burned on the PC.

The sound is clearly present since it only disappears when some kind of 'navigation' is performed (eg: >>, <<, >>|, |<<, ||, ||>, |>, |<) and can be "restored" by ejecting/re-inserting the disc.

Since these discs have now been confirmed to play perfectly on other players I am now fairly convinced that the problem is with my DVR. My suspicion is that there is some peculiarity about the DVD structure of these particular discs that this DVR model just doesn't like (but other players can handle fine).

Even if it were possible to identify the particular quirk in the structure that's causing the problem then, unless it was very easy to spot and then fix/change, I would probably just 'live with' the problem.:) It just means you have to watch a movie as if it were being shown "live" on the telly where you have no control over its progress (& have to make sure you've been to the loo before it starts :D) Anyone else remember when that was how we always had to watch movies, etc.?

If I ever get round to figuring out exactly how DVDs "work" I may investigate the problem further and, if I come up with an "answer" (or workaround), I'll be sure to publish it in here :helpful:

You might want to RE-read the "Announcement" at the top of the "Newbies" sub-forum, as well as all of the Forum Rules (particularly #6) - especially since any member providing assistance here might also be "struck"...
