I am trying to decrypt a dvd, but neither Smartripper, vStrip nor DVDDecrypter are able to handle this dvd. It plays fine and without problems using windvd and powerdvd. The dvd in question is disc 1 in the 3 disc set of Fawlty Towers (John Cleese). Now, what happens is this: vStrip and smartripper keep trying to read vts_01_5.vob (0-7 are available, only nr. 5 gives trouble) and has to be terminated. DVDDecrypter handles this situation much better and presents this error:
-----------------------------
ASPI Command Error!
Device: LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 [1:0:0]
ASPI SRB Status: 0x04
Interpretation: SRB Completed With Error
Host Adapter Status: 0x00
Interpretation: Host Adapter Did Not Detect An Error
Target Status: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition
CDB: A8 00 00 1E C3 24 00 00 00 01 00 00
Interpretation: Read (12) - Sector: 2016036
Sense Area: 70 00 03 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 11 06
Interpretation: CIRC Unrecovered Error
-----------------------------
Now, neither windvd nor powerdvd has any problems playing this dvd which seems to me like the dvd decrypting assumes too much or tries to read to much (read stuff that is not referenced -> purposely defect area, much like safedisc).
If I try to copy the vob file with explorer, I get a cyclic redundancy check error.
I know this seems like a simple read error or scratched dvd, but there are no scratches and software dvd players have no troubles with this dvd.
I can ignore the read error, but there are numerous read errors and each one takes about 5 seconds.
Does anyone have any suggestion to what I could try?

Software players never have problems with disc...I dont know how they do it, they just do!
All I can guess, it that they set the hardware retries to something like 0 and just skip the bad sectors.
Try turning Fast Error Skip on in DVD Decrypter and set retries to 0 - hmmm...funny that ;)
The odd sector here and there wont make a blind bit of difference....there are hundreds of thousands of them!
Click 'Ignore' when u come across an error....after 5 errors, u can choose to automatically ignore ALL errors. If there are loads...i suggest you do this :)

Well, I am not talking about the odd sector here and there, but numerous consecutive sectors. Also, for each error, my dvd drive spins down and then up again and also repositions the head. It sounds like it is trying several times for each error. I don't know how to set hardware retries to 0, but I did set retries to 0 in DVDDecrypter. This is part of the log file:

This is 1 blok of read errors. I quit DVDDecrypter after a few bloks, as this was quite time consuming (each read error take 7-8 seconds). How dvd players avoid these read errors, I don't know, but they do not use the windows file system to access the vob files like DVDDecrypter does. Check with TaskInfo2000, dvd players do not reference any files on the dvd, which means they use a lower level of access.
DVDDecrypter also was not able to fully authenticate this dvd, vob files 5,6,7 were not authenticated. I had to run windvd/powerdvd first.

Are you trying to rip with your burner? I have a pioneer A03 and it always gives me these errors. If I rip with a standard dvd-rom, it works fine. Think the burner is not a very good reader.

The Liteon LTD163 is a 16x DVD/48x cdrom drive combo (a regular DVD drive). Liteon does not make a CD R/RW/DVD combo.
I have tried this disk in 4 DVD drives now and I know for sure it plays in 3 of them. The one it does not play normally in is Ricoh 9120 (firmware 1.30). This drive is a CD R/RW/DVD combo. It skips part of the intro (the problem area).
I tried to rip this dvd in 3 of the previous 4 mentioned drives. It succeded(!) in a Pioneer drive using smartripper 2.41 (model of drive not know right now, but it is a slot-in drive).
Liteon LTD163 (plays normally, can't rip)
Ricoh MP9120 (playing skips intro, can't rip)
Pioneer slot-in (plays normally, rips). I believe 106 is part of the modelnumber.
Unknown drive (plays normally, don't about ripping)
I left the DVD disk in the drive during the night and this morning, the disk had developed a spot. I was able to polish the spot and make most of it disappear. The pioneer driver could rip dispite of the residue of the spot.
I just figured that if a drive can play a movie, a dvd ripper should be able to rip the movie. Apparently this is not so with the Liteon LTD163.
Bummer.

You cant authenticate part of a dvd, it's all or nothing.
A seek error is bad...it means the drive cannot accuratly position the laser over the required sector. Basically that disc is sh@gged :)
DVD Decrypter doesnt reference any files on the dvd via windows either. It is totally self contained. It reads the physical sectors via ASPI (in the same way as a dvd player does) and has its own UDF parser to build up a picture of the filesystem so that it looks nice to the user...i.e it displays file names.
Glad to hear you finally got it ripped though :)

Ok I just tried to rip Vol 1 of faulty towers , and here is what i had to do
I had to user smartripper and go into file mode and select all the vobs.
the first 3 episodes are absolutely perfect , the 4th episode
is narratted with no episode dialog. then there is the
added stuff at the end which has sound.
Very wierd , but I didnt have any trouble copying the vobs in filemode
now when i did the automatic mode it only copied vob1,2
wierd
i think because it is setup individually

I've just ripped the second disk of Fawlty Towers. I did it in movie mode, and found no problems. I ripped each separately with the Sound Stream for the dialog. You have to decrypt 4 times as each of the episodes is separate, but I prefer it that way anyway. This is Region 1. I had to encode at 30 fps though as the whole thing is Video Sourced, which was kind of a drag.
