I've started playing with AutoMKV. I made an h264 MKV from a DVD9, encoded to 1/3 DVD size, keeping the standard settings, and the result was quite nice.
My next encode, another music DVD9, I played with various settings and the result was rather disappointing:
- as the video progresses (180 minutes), the audio gets further and further out of sync.
- video quality was OK, but now and then there were jerks in the movements, as if some frames were lost. If that's the case, that may explain the out-of-sync audio as well.
- out of curiosity of how big the audio track was, I used MKVmerge to save the audio track as an MP3 file. This played very jerkily (with regular jerks). In the video it played fine. Not sure if this is an indication of what went wrong with AutoMKV or if it's a problem of MKVmerge.
I used AutoMKV 0.95c. Standard settings except as follows. Input was a DVD9 rip. I used the PCM track as a source for audio and encoded to insane MP3 VBR quality. 2 subtitle tracks were included. Resize none, using the full original picture. Encode to 1/3 DVD size, MKV, x264. Profile 2pass better quality. Default filter RemoveGrain(mode=2). Advanced settinmgs changed: HQ deinterlace selected (because the source is definitely interlaced and looks poorly without deint).
The difference with the first successful encode is only the higher Q MP3, Profile was 2pass balanced before, and HQ deinterlacing.
Which of these could cause the above problems? Could it be the PC was also doing some small background tasks such as a download? I'm asking because I haven't figured out yet if I can do small parts encodes of this long movie for tests. Encoding the whole movie takes 30 hours.
