View Full Version : Which would give better visual results: 2pass w/ TS or 3pass w/o TS?

Hi Guys,
I'm trying to encode The Iron Giant which is about 90minutes long using DVD2SVCD and curious as to what settings would give me better results as the time for 2pass with Temporal Smoother(2,1) and 3pass without TS is about the same for me. The average bit rate is 1100 as I am trying to squeeze the movie onto 1 CD. Any opinions? Thanks.

geez...with that bitrate..I'd look into DIVX

I know the bitrate is extremely low but I figured that it would compress slightly better being a cartoon in addition to being letterboxed. It also keeps the kids quite when you don't have to swap CDs as much. :) BTW, I just finished a 2pass with TS and the results were a little dissapointing as scenes with moderate motion showed some macroblocking. I guess I'll try 3 or 4 passes without TS as it slows down the encoding by 40%.

three or four passes *with* TS would probably be the way to go for such a low bitrate. You *might* be able to get a somewhat decent encode, but 90 mins on one CD is bordering on the silly (no offense meant).

hi Kfactor,
there are some things that you can try, of course with no guarantees that any one will work. Just worth a try:
option 1:
try some CCE patcher of matrixes. With such patcher, it is possible to change the matrix used in CCE 2.5 to another one more apropriated, such as "very low bitrate", or "angel svcd 1cd", or wathever;
option 2:
test if your player has CVCD support, which is a SVCD with VCD resolution. You can make such CVCD editing the AVS file, changing the default values to values of VCD resolution. For example, if NTSC:
BicubicResize(352,240,0.00,0.75)#if 4:3 resolution
BicubicResize(352,180,0.00,0.75)#if 16:9 resolution
AddBorders(0,30,0,30)
If your player has such support, using options 1 and 2, plus TS and 4 pass VBR, you can fit even Gladiator into 1 CD with a quality good enough for kids.;)

Where can one find such patcher

Hi Guys,
Just finished 3pass with TS and the quality is much better although it's not too sharp, it is much smoother with less macroblocking. Just another question, should I be using the the "anti noise filter" in CCE in conjunction with TS? Would that be kinda of over doing it as TS is also a filter? Thanks again.

Since bilinear is a little more compressable than bicubic you might want to try editing th script and replacing the bicubic parameters with bilinear. Note, you will only need the sizing parameters with bilinear, drop the others.
Edit: As of the 1.06 version, Bilinear is available in the framegrabbing tab and editing is no longer required.

I put a 96 minute movie onto one cd. 2 pass w/TS 2:1. looks fine, I lowered the audio to 96 though. still is fine.
