View Full Version : Unrealistic expectations? All I need is yes or no from those who know

Really quick question - just need to know if my expectations are unrealistic or not.
I'm using MeGUI to backup DVD's at full resolution. From reading the boards, most people who use x264 are getting good results from bitrates around 800-1000.
Is this bitrate realistic for getting as close to transparency in dvd backups as possible?
I've been playing with filters and the boat load of settings and I can't seem to get movies to hit below 1.2 gb with quality (about 1750 kb/sec for a 90 min movie) that i see as transparent or 90% transparent.
are these guys who get these ridiculous bitrates working with smaller resolution movies as their outputs or am i just scratching the surface of x264's potential?

It'd help to know what settings/similar you were using.

at this point:
--crf 19.0 --deadzone-inter 10 --deadzone-intra 5 --ref 8 --mixed-refs --no-fast-pskip --bframes 4 --b-pyramid --b-rdo --bime --weightb --direct auto --filter -2,-1 --subme 6 --analyse all --8x8dct --qpmin 8 --qpmax 49 --me umh --threads 2 --thread-input --cqmfile "prestige.cqm" --progress --no-dct-decimate --output "output" "input"

i use this with blockbuster in the avs.

i also often try it without the deadzone and use trellis 2 instead.
and i also play with the bitrates (2-pass).
i guess i was just wondering if it's even possible to gain such near-transparency with bitrates lower or equal to 1000.

Are you using the latest revision of x264? (rev 798). You could also try the modified version that has VAQ, which will hopefully be added to the main version shortly.

Try removing qpmin and qpmax, I thought they shouldn't be there when using crf mode.

Try removing the cqmfile option. Also a subme of 7 although slightly slower given your choice of other options would be beneficial.

I take it the resolution is normal DVD resolution? What audio compression are you using? If you have 4 audio tracks in AC3 sound that swallows a whole heap of bandwidth!

i will try that - thanks.
i am keeping the original english ac3 audio, although i'm not even including the audio yet - just looking at video quality.

is it reasonable to get 1000 kb/sec for a good quality dvd rip at full res?
