View Full Version : Merging VOB files, converting result to AVI (with subtitles)

When ripping a DVD, I set the VOB files to split by chapter. This resulted in 21 VOB files and just one IFO file (which relates I believe to the first VOB file).

I now want to merge the 21 VOBs into 1 VOB file, and use AutoGK to convert this new merged VOB into an AVI.

I can merge the VOBs using the basic DOS command of the form:
copy /b first.vob + second.vob output.VOB
but I'm still left with the fact that my IFO file doesn't relate to this VOB.
Is there any way to modify the IFO I have, or generate a new one, so that it correctly relates to the new merged VOB file?

Or am I looking at this the wrong way? How else would I convert this new VOB to AVI?
There's an additional complication that the movie contains a mixture of languages, and I want English subtitles to appear for the non-English portions of the movie. I'm not sure if this has been implemented using a subtitle track for just the non-English portions of the movie, or if it has been done with a "forced" subsection of the full-length English subtitle track.

(If I just select the merged VOB as input to AutoGK, I get no subtitle options listed in AutoGK's "Subtitle Tracks" box.)

Thanks for any insight you might have!

There's no need to merge them into one VOB.

Thanks for the reply.

When I select a VOB file as input to AutoGK, no subtitle options appear in AutoGK's "Subtitle Tracks" box.

When I select the IFO file as input to AutoGK, only the first VOB file (i.e. first chapter) gets converted to AVI.

I want the entire movie to be converted to one AVI.

Where did you get these files? Something doesn't sound right about them.

I ripped them myself off a standard movie DVD using DVD Decrypter in IFO mode. I just wanted to convert the movie to AVI to watch on my portable media player.

I've seen this situation a couple of times recently when I wanted to include subtitles in my converted AVI. I select a VOB file as input to AutoGK and no subtitle streams appear in the "Subtitle Tracks" box. If I select the IFO file, the subtitle streams are listed in the "Subtitle Tracks" box.

That's fine if you have just one VOB file, but I've been ripping DVDs into several VOBs (one per chapter) and I still get just one IFO file, which relates only to the first VOB file.
So AutoGK's conversion process produces one AVI file which is just the first chapter of the movie.

I've been ripping chapters to separate VOBs because having one AVI per chapter makes it easier to skip forward/backward through a movie on my portable media player. But I think I'm just going to have to start ripping the entire movie to a single VOB, so that I don't have any issues with subtitle streams not being listed in AutoGK.

If AutoGK is giving you issues, then convert it manually.

@osullic

Hi!Re-ripping is not an option.I ripped them myself off a standard movie DVD using DVD Decrypter in IFO mode... I just don't have the disc anymore.
You might want to RE-read the "Announcement" at the top of the "Newbies" sub-forum, as well as all of the Forum Rules (particularly #6) - especially since any member providing assistance here might also be "struck"...

My apologies. I see how what I've said could be misconstrued to support copyright infringement, which I don't. I will keep this in mind for my future posts.
I have also just now re-read the announcement and rules you pointed out.
Thanks
